How Many Days Should You Spend in China?

For most first-time visitors, 10 to 14 days is the ideal length. Over 70% of our clients choose this timeframe, and after over a decade of planning China trips, we’ve seen that it works well for a comfortable, well-paced trip.

China takes time to explore properly. Most major destinations need at least 2 to 3 full days, and once you factor in arrivals, departures, and travel between cities, a 7-day trip goes by very quickly. Many travelers who try to fit too much into one week end up wishing they had allowed more time.

If this is your first visit, 10 to 14 days gives you the right balance between seeing the highlights and actually enjoying them.

7 vs 10 vs 14 Days in China — Which Should You Choose?

7-Day China Itinerary — Short and Focused

Seven days works only if you keep things simple. You can explore two cities well, such as Beijing and Xi’an or Beijing and Shanghai. With just one week, the key is to focus and avoid trying to do too much.

Best 7-day routes: Beijing and Xi’an, Beijing and Shanghai, or one region such as Yunnan or Sichuan.

10-Day China Itinerary — The Most Efficient First Trip

Ten days works well for Beijing, Xi’an, and Shanghai at a comfortable pace. That is the classic first-time route called China Golden Triangle, and 10 days gives you enough time to see it properly without rushing.

With 10 days, you can comfortably add one extra stop along the route, such as Datong or Pingyao between Beijing and Xi’an, a day trip to Luoyang from Xi’an, or Suzhou or Hangzhou near Shanghai.

Want to include Guilin or Zhangjiajie? It’s better to allow 12 to 13 days. These destinations take time to reach and need at least 2 to 3 days on the ground to be worthwhile.

Best 10-day routes:

  • Beijing, Xi’an, Shanghai with Suzhou or Hangzhou
  • Beijing, Datong or Pingyao, Xi’an, Shanghai
  • Beijing, Xi’an, Luoyang, Shanghai

14-Day China Itinerary — The Full Experience

Fourteen days gives you the best overall experience. You can visit four to five destinations at a comfortable pace, combine history with landscapes, and still have time to slow down and enjoy each place.

Best 14-day routes: Beijing, Xi’an, Guilin, Zhangjiajie, Shanghai or Beijing, Xi’an, Chengdu, Yangtze Cruise, Shanghai.

Practical Tips When Planning Your China Itinerary

  • Start with your visa. This usually decides how long your trip can be.
Most travelers get up to 30 days with a standard tourist visa, so you have plenty of flexibility. If you’re using the 240-hour visa-free transit, you’re looking at around 10 days, so it’s better to keep things simple and stick to two or three cities. The China 30-day visa-free entry works pretty much the same as a regular visa.
  • Travel time adds up faster than you expect.
China is huge, and getting from one city to another takes time. Even with fast trains or short flights, you’ll usually spend about half a day just getting there and settled.
A good way to think about it:
    • plan 2 to 3 days in each major city
    • allow about half a day every time you move
  • Try to avoid the busiest times if you can.
Golden Week in early October and Chinese New Year are the busiest travel periods in China. Places get crowded with domestic tourists, and trains and hotels book out quickly. If possible, avoid planning your trip around these dates.
If you have flexibility, April to June and September to early November are usually the best times to go. The weather is good, crowds are more manageable, and costs are generally lower.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days is enough for China?

For a first visit, 10 to 14 days is enough to cover the main highlights at a comfortable pace. Seven days works if you focus on two cities. Anything less than a week will feel rushed for a country this size.

Is 7 days enough for China?

Seven days is enough for two cities or one region but not for a full China experience. If you want to visit Beijing, Xi’an, and Shanghai, you need at least 9 to 10 days. With 7 days, pick two destinations and do them properly.

Is 2 weeks enough for China?

Yes. Two weeks is the ideal length for most first-time visitors. You can cover four to five destinations including Beijing, Xi’an, Guilin, and Shanghai, and add one scenic extension like Zhangjiajie or a Yangtze River Cruise.

What is the best China itinerary for first-time visitors?

The most popular first-time itinerary is 13 to 14 days covering Beijing, Xi’an, Guilin, and Shanghai. This route covers imperial history, ancient wonders, dramatic karst scenery, and modern city life in one well-paced trip. See our 2 Week China Itinerary guide for full route options.

Can I add Tibet to a China itinerary?

Yes. Tibet can be a great addition to your China trip. A short 4 to 5 days allows you to visit Lhasa, the capital of Tibet. With 7 to 8 days you can explore central Tibet or include a trip to Everest Base Camp (North face). To visit Tibet, all foreign travelers must join an organized tour with a Tibet Travel Permit and licensed guide. See our China Tibet tour options for combined itineraries.
