Tibet Group Tour FAQ: Your Questions Answered

1. How much does a Tibet group tour cost and what’s included?

Tibet group tour prices depend on itinerary length and destinations:
4 days (Lhasa City Tour): from USD 499 per person
6 days (Lhasa, Gyantse, Shigatse): from USD 770 per person
7 days (Lhasa to Kathmandu Overland): from USD 975 per person
8 days (Lhasa to Everest Base Camp): from USD 924 per person
13 to 15 days (Lhasa, Everest and Mount Kailash): from USD 2,140 per person

All tours include: Tibet Travel Permits, English-speaking local Tibetan guide, private vehicle and driver, 3-star hotels or guesthouses, entrance tickets, and airport or train transfers.
Not included: international and domestic flights, most meals, personal expenses, and tips.

2. Are Tibet group tours guaranteed to depart?

Yes. Once you book, your departure is guaranteed regardless of group size. That means solo travelers can join without worrying about cancellations. Departures run on weekly or monthly schedules depending on the itinerary.

3. How many people are usually in a Tibet group tour?

All our Tibet group tours are limited to 12 travelers. Keeping groups small makes the trip more personal and comfortable. You will have plenty of time to interact with your guide, ask questions, and travel at your own pace without feeling rushed.

4. What hotels are used on a Tibet group tour?

Most Tibet group tours include 3-star hotels in Lhasa, Shigatse, and other major towns. These are clean, well-located, and include private bathrooms and breakfast. Upgrades to 4-star or 5-star hotels are available on request where options exist.

In remote areas such as Everest Base Camp or the Mount Kailash Kora, accommodation is simpler. The standard package includes basic guesthouses with shared rooms, as facilities at high altitude are limited. An upgrade to a twin-bed room at Rongbuk Monastery guesthouse is available at Everest Base Camp for those who prefer more comfort.

5. Are Tibet group tours cheaper than private tours?

Usually yes, particularly for solo travelers and couples. Group tour prices are based on shared costs, which keeps the per-person rate lower than booking a private trip.
That said, if you are traveling with 4 or more people, a private Tibet tour can be similar in price. For groups of 6 or more, a private tour may actually work out cheaper per person, with the added benefit of a fully flexible itinerary.

6. How do I get to Tibet to join the group tour?

Most travelers fly into Lhasa from gateway cities in mainland China such as Chengdu, Chongqing, Xi’an, Beijing, or Shanghai. Another popular option is the Qinghai-Tibet Railway from Xining, which offers stunning scenery and helps with altitude acclimatization along the way.
You can also fly from Kathmandu to Lhasa if you are combining Tibet with a Nepal trip.
Your Tibet Travel Permit will be arranged by WindhorseTour and delivered to your departure city before your flight, or sent as a copy if you are traveling by train.

7. Will I have free time on a Tibet group tour?

Yes. While the daily itinerary is fixed, there is usually free time in Lhasa and some evenings to explore independently.

Tibet Travel Permit and How to Apply

The Tibet Travel Permit, also known as Tibet Entry Permit, is an essential document required for all non-Chinese passport holders, including foreign tourists, residents of Taiwan, and overseas Chinese, who wish to visit the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR). It’s issued by the Tibet Tourism Bureau and will be checked at airports, train stations, and even some attractions during your trip in Tibet. While some mistakenly refer to it as a “Tibet visa,” this is not accurate. Tibet is a part of China, so a separate visa for Tibet is not required. Instead, you’ll need a valid China visa (or qualify…

Best Time to Visit Tibet

Wondering when is the best time to visit Tibet? The answer depends on what you want most from your journey. Known as the “Roof of the World,” Tibet sits on the world’s highest plateau, where sunshine is strong, the air is thin, and the landscapes shift dramatically with each season. The overall best time to visit Tibet is from April to November, when the weather is more stable and temperatures are generally comfortable. Among these, May, June, September, and October are considered the most favorable months. During this time, travelers can expect clear blue skies, mild daytime temperatures, excellent visibility for mountain views and…

How to avoid high-altitude sickness in Tibet

When planning a trip to Tibet, many travelers worry about altitude sickness, and for good reason. Often called “the Roof of the World,” Tibet sits on the planet’s highest plateau, averaging 4,500 meters (14,764 feet) above sea level. Even Lhasa, the capital city and one of the lowest points in Tibet, is at 3,650 meters (12,000 feet). Destinations like Mount Everest Base Camp rise even higher, reaching over 5,200 meters (17,060 feet). At these altitudes, the risk of acute mountain sickness (AMS) is real and can affect anyone, regardless of age, fitness level, or prior high-altitude experience. In this guide,…

Quick Answer: 1–3 travelers → group tour is more cost-effective 4+ travelers → private tour offers better value and flexibility Group tours: fixed itinerary, lower price, standard highlights Private tours: flexible itinerary, customizable routes, higher comfort Since independent travel is not permitted in Tibet, all foreign travelers must book through a licensed Tibet travel agency.
