Nyingchi: The Low-Altitude Gateway to Tibet's "Switzerland"

Our Tibet Nyingchi tours take you to one of Tibet’s most scenic regions, often called the “Switzerland of Tibet” for its lush forests, clear rivers, snow-capped peaks, and spectacular peach blossoms in spring.

At around 3,000 m above sea level, Nyingchi is significantly lower than much of Tibet, making it an ideal gateway with less risk of altitude sickness for first-time visitors to Tibet. Highlights include turquoise Basum-tso Lake, the vast Lulang Forest, panoramic views of Mount Namche Barwa, and the scenic drive from Pomi to the ever-changing Ranwu Lake with its nearby stunning glaciers.

Each year from late March to early April, our Nyingchi Peach Blossom festival tours take you to Gala Peach Blossom Village and Bomi Peach Blossom Valley, where the wild blossoms blanket the valleys in pink and white, creating a paradise for photographers and nature lovers.

Easily combine your Nyingchi tour with Lhasa, Yamdrok Lake, Shigatse, or Mount Everest Base Camp for a richer exploration of Tibet’s culture and landscapes. Every Nyingchi tour itinerary can be tailor-made to match your pace and interests.

FAQs about Nyingchi Travel & Tours

What is the best time to visit Nyingchi?

The best time to visit Nyingchi is from March to October, when the weather is mild and scenery is at its best. For the Peach Blossom Festival, plan your trip between late March and early April, when valleys and villages like Gala Peach Blossom Village and Bomi Peach Blossom Valley are blanketed in pink and white blossoms, making it the most beautiful season of the year.

How do I get to Nyingchi in Tibet?

You can reach Nyingchi from both Lhasa and some major cities in mainland China.

• From Lhasa:
The most convenient way is by high-speed train, which takes around 5 hours and offers stunning views of valleys and the Yarlung Tsangpo River. Alternatively, you can also drive from Lhasa via the new Lhasa–Nyingchi highway or the original G318 highway, a 5–6 hour journey with scenic stops along the way and an optional visit to Draksum Tso Lake.

• From some major cities in mainland China:
You can fly directly to Nyingchi Mainling Airport (LZY) from Chengdu, Chongqing, Xi’an, and Beijing. The Chengdu and Chongqing routes are the most frequent and reliable, taking about 2–2.5 hours.
Another option is to take the Qinghai–Tibet train to Lhasa, then continue to Nyingchi by high-speed train or car.
For those who love road adventure, the Sichuan–Tibet Highway (G318) offers a breathtaking multi-day overland journey through some of Tibet’s most spectacular landscapes and will pass Nyingchi.

Do I need a permit to travel to Nyingchi?

Yes. Since Nyingchi is part of the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR), all foreign travelers need a Tibet Travel Permit (TTP) to enter. This permit can only be arranged through a licensed Tibet travel agency, which will also organize your trip in Tibet.

What are the top attractions in Nyingchi?

Nyingchi is often called the “Switzerland of Tibet” for its lush valleys, turquoise lakes, and snow-capped peaks. Must-see highlights include:
Basum-tso Lake (Draksum Tso): A stunning alpine lake with turquoise waters, ancient forests, and the island-based Tsodzong Monastery.
Lulang Forest: A vast alpine meadow surrounded by spruce, pine, and rhododendron, with sweeping views of snow peaks.
• Mount Namche Barwa (7,782 m): Known as the “Father of Tibetan Mountains,” its sharp pyramid peak is one of the most striking in the Himalayas.
Ranwu Lake: A glacier-fed lake whose colors change with the seasons, framed by meadows and mountains along the Sichuan–Tibet Highway.
Midui Glacier: Ranked among China’s most beautiful glaciers, combining icefalls, forests, and alpine lakes.
Giant Cypress Nature Reserve: Home to ancient cypress trees, including the sacred “King Cypress” said to be over 2,500 years old.

How many days do I need in Nyingchi?

Most travelers spend 4-5 days in Nyingchi to explore its highlights, such as Basum-tso Lake, Lulang Forest, Mount Namche Barwa, and Ranwu Lake, Midui Glacier, or join the Nyingchi Peach Blossom Festival (late March–early April).

Nyingchi with Lhasa for a well-rounded 5–7 day trip.

Many itineraries also combine a Nyingchi tour with Lhasa, Shigatse or Yarlung Valley, making a 7–10 day trip ideal for both nature and culture.

For a longer journey, extend the Nyingchi tour westward to Shigatse and Everest Base Camp for 11–14 days.

Tibet Travel Permit and How to Apply

The Tibet Travel Permit, also known as Tibet Entry Permit, is an essential document required for all non-Chinese passport holders, including foreign tourists, residents of Taiwan, and overseas Chinese, who wish to visit the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR). It’s issued by the Tibet Tourism Bureau and will be checked at airports, train stations, and even some attractions during your trip in Tibet. While some mistakenly refer to it as a “Tibet visa,” this is not accurate. Tibet is a part of China, so a separate visa for Tibet is not required. Instead, you’ll need a valid China visa (or qualify…
