FAQs about Lhasa Tours & Travel

1. How many days do you need for a Lhasa tour?

Most travelers spend 4–6 days in Lhasa. A 4-day Lhasa city tour covers Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Street, and key monasteries like Drepung and Sera. With 5–6 days, you can add day trips to Yamdrok Lake, Namtso Lake, Ganden Monastery, Drak Yerpa or Yarlung Valley.

2. Is altitude sickness a concern in Lhasa?

Yes. Lhasa is located at 3,650 meters (12,000 ft), and altitude sickness is a common concern for travelers visiting Tibet. Most people may feel mild symptoms such as headache, dizziness, or shortness of breath when they first arrive. To reduce discomfort, it’s best to make your first day in Lhasa an acclimatization day with rest and no major sightseeing.

On our Tibet and Lhasa tours, sightseeing usually begins on Day 2 with light city exploration to give your body time to adjust. Your local Tibetan guide will share practical tips to help prevent or reduce altitude sickness—such as drinking plenty of water, eating light meals, and avoiding alcohol or overexertion. Oxygen is available in most hotels and vehicles, so you can travel in Tibet safely and comfortably.

3. Do I need a special permit to visit Lhasa?

Yes. International travelers need a Tibet Travel Permit in addition to a valid China visa to visit Lhasa and Tibet. Independent travel for foreigners is not allowed in Tibet, you need to arrange a tour and permit with a Tibet travel agency like WindhorseTour.

When you book your Tibet or Lhasa tour with us, we handle the Tibet Travel Permit and secure it before your trip starts.

4. What kind of hotels are available in Lhasa?

Lhasa has a wide range of accommodation, from budget hostels to luxury 5-star resorts:
Budget hostels & guesthouses – Great for backpackers and budget travelers. International hostels and Tibetan-style guesthouses are available in the Barkhor area and offer dorm beds or simple private rooms at affordable rates.

3-star hotels (basic standard) – Clean and safe with private bathrooms and breakfast, but facilities are simple. Suitable for travelers who want a standard hotel without extra cost. The 3 star hotel include Yak Hotel near Barkhor.

4-star hotels (mid-range) – The most popular choice for Tibet tours. These hotels provide comfortable rooms, better amenities, and higher service standards while staying affordable.

5-star hotels (luxury) – Perfect for those who want the best comfort in high altitude. Options include the St. Regis Lhasa Resort, Shangri-La Hotel Lhasa, and InterContinental Lhasa Paradise, offering luxury facilities, fine dining, spas, and even oxygen lounges.

5. What is included in a Lhasa tour package?

Our Lhasa tour packages include Tibet Travel Permit, professional English-speaking local guide, private vehicle with driver, entrance fees, accommodation (usually 3-star hotels, upgrades available), and airport/train station transfers. Meals are partly included depending on the tour.

6. How do I get to Lhasa?

You can reach Lhasa either by flight or by the Qinghai–Tibet Railway. Daily flights connect Lhasa with major Chinese cities such as Chengdu, Chongqing, Beijing, Shanghai, Kunming, and Xian. Chengdu and Chongqing usually have the most frequent and affordable options.

For a more economical and scenic choice, many travelers take the Qinghai–Tibet Railway from Xining, which crosses the Tibetan Plateau with breathtaking views and is among the world’s highest railways. Trains also operate from Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, and other cities, but the Xining to Lhasa train is the shortest and the highlight part of Qinghai–Tibet Railway is starting after the city of Golmud.

When permitted, there are also direct flights from Kathmandu to Lhasa, making it the only international air route into Tibet.
