FAQs about Tibet Central Tours & Travel

1. What is considered Central Tibet?

Central Tibet usually refers to the core cultural and historical area of Tibet, covering Lhasa, Shigatse, Gyantse, and the Yarlung Valley. This region is known as the heart of Tibetan civilization, where you can explore the most famous monasteries, palaces, and ancient sites. Highlights include Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Tashilhunpo Monastery, Samye Monastery, and Yumbulakang Palace. For first-time visitors, a Central Tibet tour is the best introduction to Tibetan history, religion, and culture.

2. How many days do I need for a Central Tibet tour?

The length of your Central Tibet tour depends on how much you’d like to explore. A 5–7 day Central Tibet itinerary is ideal for visiting Lhasa, Gyantse, and Shigatse, or combining Lhasa with the Yarlung Valley. For a deeper cultural journey, an 8–10 day tour lets you cover all four destinations or focus on three plus the stunning Namtso Lake. A more spiritual Central Lhasa tour of about 8 days can take you off the beaten path to monasteries such as Reting, Tidrum, and Drigung Til, along with Namtso. Travelers with extra time can extend their trip to Everest Base Camp or even continue across the Friendship Highway to the Nepal border for a classic overland adventure.

Suggested time for each place:
Lhasa & Surroundings: 2–4 days, check our Lhasa tours
Yarlung Valley: 2–3 days
Gyantse & Shigatse: 2–3 days

3. What can I see in a 2–3 day tour to Gyantse and Shigatse from Lhasa?

A 2–3 day tour from Lhasa to Gyantse and Shigatse takes you along the Friendship Highway with stops at Yamdrok Lake, Karola Glacier, and Gyantse’s Kumbum Stupa. In Shigatse, visit Tashilhunpo Monastery and the local market before returning to Lhasa via the Yarlung Tsangpo River, with an optional incense workshop stop in Nyemo.

4. Why is the Yarlung Valley called the cradle of Tibetan civilization?

The Yarlung Valley, southeast of Lhasa, is considered the birthplace of Tibetan culture and the seat of Tibet’s first kings, one main part of Central Tibet. Highlights include Yumbulakang Palace, Tibet’s earliest palace, Samye Monastery, the first Buddhist monastery, and Trandruk Monastery, one of the oldest temples in Tibet, famous for its pearl thangka. The valley is also home to Chimpu Hermitage, a retreat dotted with meditation caves. A visit to the Yarlung Valley offers deep insight into the origins of Tibetan civilization, making it a must for history and culture lovers.

5. Is a Central Tibet tour suitable for families or seniors?

Yes, Central Tibet tours are good for families and senior travelers because they focus on cultural experiences, shorter drives, and slower-paced itineraries compared to remote trekking tours. The altitude in Lhasa (3,650 m), Shigatse (3,840 m), and the Yarlung Valley (around 3,100–3,500 m) requires some acclimatization, but most people manage well with a gradual schedule. Visiting monasteries, palaces, and traditional towns makes these tours enriching and enjoyable for travelers of all ages.

6. Can Central Tibet tours be combined with Everest Base Camp or Nepal?

Absolutely. Many travelers start with a Central Tibet itinerary covering Lhasa, Yarlung Valley, Gyantse, and Shigatse, then continue their overland trip along the Friendship Highway to Everest Base Camp for a once-in-a-lifetime view of the world’s highest peak. From Everest, you can choose travel back to Lhasa, or continue westward to the Gyirong Border and cross into Kathmandu, Nepal. This combination offers both cultural highlights and breathtaking Himalayan landscapes.

7. When is the best time to visit Central Tibet?

The best months to visit Central Tibet are from April to October, when the weather is mild and travel conditions are great for sightseeing. Summer (June–August) brings lush green valleys, while autumn (September–October) offers cool air and excellent visibility for photography. Winter (November–February) is colder, but Lhasa, Yarlung Valley and Shigatse are still accessible, with fewer tourists and a chance to see nomad pilgrims during these months as they are worshiping around the monasteries in central Tibet.

Returning customer - Yunnan Highlands This was our second tour with Windhorse. We had had such a great experience on the Silk Road we felt we have found an operator on our wavelength and so opted this time for the Yunnan Highlands and got off the beaten track. As before, high standard of hotels and homestays, very carefully curated itineraries, and above all excellent guides and drivers which is what makes the trip so unforgettable. We will be continuing to use Windhorse for all our trips to China.

Trip of a lifetime 13 day Yunnan highlands cultural private tour This was our second private tour in China, booked directly with Windhorse Tour, and it won’t be our last. Last year, we started in Beijing and then began a Silk Road tour from Xi’An to Urumqi in Xinjiang, and the experience was breathtaking, so Windhorse Tour is an all-China travel specialist and their experience, contacts and knowledge are not just localised to the areas bordering the Sichuan-Tibetan plateau. Wanting something different, we looked to Yunnan and Victoria, our travel consultant, was excellent in putting together a personalised itinerary taking in Lijiang, Shuhe town, Baisha village, Lugu lake and Daluoshui village, Shangri-la, Feilaisi resort, dropping into or passing through Cizong, Tacheng and Shigu towns, finishing in Lijiang again in a circular tour through mountains, lakes and canyons. Victoria’s choice of hotels was excellent as was her selection of driver and guides. We had one driver throughout the trip who was excellent and two different guides. All were friendly, courteous and professional. Our guides spoke excellent English and their knowledge of the local history, culture and customs were impeccable. They recommended fantastic restaurants and were keen for us to really sample local foods and drinks. They were always considerate and looked after us, ensuring the pace was ok and letting us shop for souvenirs or stopping for photos. We walked on ancient cobbled stones in historical villages, visited temples high above the clouds or built in caves and cliffsides, climbed to altitudes of 4,680m and cruised on mirror-like lakes. We visited the homes of traditional Naxi and Mosuo families and a Lesuo village high in the Yunnan highlands. I seriously cannot fault any aspect of our trip from hotels, transportation and food to pace, viewpoints or the itinerary. It was very client focussed and our hosts only wanted us to have the best experience ever and that we did. Will definitely be booking with Windhorse Tour again to explore another part of China. I cannot thank or commend them more.

High quality and personalized travel experience We had an exceptional experience with WindHorse’s Delia, our travel consultant, before, during and after the trip. I highly recommend this agency to anyone planning a trip. Delia made the entire planning process easy and stress-free. She listened carefully and accommodated every request possible within our itinerary and requirements. Her responsiveness before the trip made me feel confident of my choice. Her service during the trip was efficient and prompt at any time of the day. Knowing she was always available gave me tremendous peace of mind. We booked a 2-person private tour with a SUV, chauffeur and a dedicated tour guide. This package, especially the tour guide - Ping, exceeded all our expectations. We had specifically requested a certain type of tour guide, and Ping absolutely outshone the experience itself. Not only was she knowledgeable, but also personable, attentive, and perfectly matched to what we asked for. Her enthusiasm, insight, and care made our trip unforgettable. We don’t eat spicy food. (And who would visit Chengdu and omit the quintessential hot and spicy foods.) But Ping was able to locate very good restaurants which served delicious non-spicy local entrees in private dining rooms at every scenic spot we visited. Wind Horse travel consultant Delia and our guide Ping created a memorable and seamless journey. We would not hesitate to use WindHorse again.

Great Experience in China with Windhorse Tours Kids have never been to China. Decided to book with Windhorse based upon reviews and an email dialogue with Windhorse representative Jenny. Ended up going with a two week private tour tailored for our family. Had a guide and minibus in every city. Guides met us at airports/train stations and also helped us check-in at every location as well. The only snafu was a delayed flight to start the trip. They were responsive in real-time and helped arrange new airport pickups for multiple parties. Would definitely use them again.

Private tailored tour; ask for Jenny! I rarely write reviews however this truly deserves one. I emailed Windhorse Tours directly two days before I flew out looking for a tour guide and itinerary. I also emailed some other companies however, Windhorse was the first one to get back to me and also the only one that said they could take it on at such late notice. I was lucky enough to have someone called Jenny reach out to me and she was absolutely meticulous and always ready to update or make changes, even til late into the evening. Always very helpful and offered some great advice. My itinerary was sorted, some additional flights she found for me as I was continuing on and she even checked on me mid journey as the Cathay Pacific flight had been delayed and I missed the connection because of this. She also checked a couple of times during the trip how everything was going. Honestly, the best personal and professional service. Can only highly recommend, especially Jenny. I travel a lot and deal with ground operators frequently; this stood apart from the others. Well above what was necessary for them to do. I’d give them ten stars if I could.

Excellent experience with Windhorse Tour When I was researching and planning my trip to Tibet two months before the trip, I contacted six tour operators (four of them based in Tibet) for quotes and itineraries. One of my requests was to do a day-trip from Lhasa to Shigatse by train. All of the tour operators, except for Windhorse, told me right away that a day tour from Lhasa to Shigatse by train would be too rushed, and that it could not be done. But Delia from Windhorse was very open to and supportive of my requests right from the first e-mail reply (Delia always replied to my e-mails promptly, with detailed answers to my questions and clear explanations on tour specifics). What I really appreciated was how Delia helped plan my trip with attentiveness and care, meeting all my requests and staying within budget, and offering advice that would make the trip more time-efficient and cost-effective. Every part of the trip went smoothly as planned, from tour payments via Alipay, delivering the Visit Tibet Permit to the hotel where I was staying prior to the flight to Lhasa, to the sightseeing schedule each day. The guide was knowledgeable and helpful (especially in dealing with all the security checkpoints). And the driver was kind and patient. It was an exceptional trip (the day trip from Lhasa to Shigatse by train was truly special), thanks to Delia for her thoughtful planning and excellent suggestions. I'm hoping to make another trip to Tibet - this time an overland Kathmandu-Lhasa trip, and I look forward to booking this next trip with Delia and Windhorse.

Fantastic Tour by a very customer-oriented agency We requested an entirely private tour for our family of 3. We had quite precise ideas about the places and sights to visit. Windhorse Tour fully respected our wishes; they added some more recommended visits and some amendments of our rough travel plan to make it match perfectly with train schedules, necessary time for the visits etc. Developing the final tour plan with them was a pure pleasure. The resulting tour gave us a variety of impressions and a comprehensive overview of modern and historical China. The whole tour was perfectly organized. All the guides and drivers were always exactly on time. All the reservations (flights, trains, hotels, monuments and sights) were perfect and everything went smooth. Windhorse Tour’s information in our tour plan was 100% accurate and we saw all the places according to our tour plan. Thanks to their careful time planning, we were never in a hurry during our visits. The plan gave us enough flexibility to allow us to adapt it to our daily individual wishes or to the weather conditions. All our tour guides were very knowledgeable about Chinese history, traditions, culture, monuments, vegetation and fauna, geology etc. They were very customer-oriented and always respected our wishes. The did everything to allow us to avoid the big crowds, showed us the most scenic spots for pictures, knew nice restaurants for lunch or dinner etc. They also showed us places off the beaten tracks that we would not have found without their help. When we had any special problem, they solved it for us. (e.g. a forgotten backpack in a hotel; the guide organized getting it back within 24 h). We did not want to visit souvenir shops. Our guides never took us there, but we had the opportunity to buy quality artwork or handicrafts if interested. All the drivers were very reliable. We were picked up as planned at all train stations, airports, hotels and places after visits. The drivers were courteous, driving carefully and safely and they respected our wishes. All the hotel reservations were done as agreed in the tour plan. Windhorse Tour had carefully selected the hotels according to our wishes (location, category, room type, meal plan). Windhorse Tour was always very responsive before and during our tour. They answered our questions and wishes very swiftly and never left us alone with a problem. The price of our private tour was fair and there were no hidden costs. I can warmly recommend Windhorse Tour as a very professional, reliable and customer-oriented tour operator.

It's a group of 20 people went to Mt.Kailash via Beijing-Lhasa- Shigatse-EBC-Saga-Lake Manasorvar-Darchen- Mt.Kailash-Parikarama- Lhasa-Beijing 2. Right from the planning and fine tuning the itinerary, Yuki from Windhorse helped us immensely and she was thorough on her inputs. Well experienced guidance from her. 3. All Accommodations throughout the tour was great. With one hiccup of Lake Manasorvar hot spring hotel promised was not able to secure which disappointed the whole team. This should have been communicated way in advance and alternate accommodation arrangement made should have been communicated well in advance. 4. Airport Pickups/Drop off arrangements were handled properly. No hiccups. 5. All tour vehicles used within Tibet region was great. 6. Food options were great. Some days beyond Saga , food were provided with available options. 7. Tour guide Mr.Tashi was way well experienced and more caring person. Kudos to his service. The driver of the bus is so accommodative and provided excellent services. 8. Few item promised on the itinerary were not able to doable due to authorities' restriction on road unavailability. This should have been communicated well in advance. 9. And Beijing tour guide had some mixed comments. Driver was excellent in beijing. Due to airport change, the alternate arrangement made was much appreciable but drop at dinner restaurant was not planned well. It put entire group into a very disappointed mood. This should have been handled better. 10. Price is also very reasonable. 11. Keep up the good service Windhorse team.

Grazie Delia!!

An Amazing China & Tibet Journey with WindhorseTour We had a wonderful experience with WindhorseTour during our China and Tibet trip in August 2026. Our journey took us from Beijing and Xi’an to Zhangye and Xining, and then into Tibet, where we visited Lhasa, Draksum Tso, Lulang, Ranwu Lake, Midui Glacier, Bayi, Ganden Monastery, Namtso Lake and Yamdrok Tso. It was a fascinating combination of Chinese history and culture and the incredible landscapes of Tibet. A special thank you to Sylvia, who was extremely helpful and professional throughout the planning of our trip. She was always responsive, patient and willing to adapt the itinerary to what we wanted. The organization of such a complicated journey was excellent, with many different trains, flights, hotels, transfers and guides involved. Everything was well coordinated, which allowed us to enjoy the trip without having to worry about the logistics. We are very happy that we chose WindhorseTour for this journey and would definitely recommend them to anyone planning a private trip to China and Tibet. Thank you, Sylvia, and the whole WindhorseTour team, for a truly memorable trip!

Amazing journey through fascinating nature and vibrant cities I highly recommend WindhorseTour if you want to live your journey across China with the good mix of fascinating nature, cultural experiences, and vibrant cities. Eva was perfect in supporting us in every part of the journey, from the initial planning to the day-to-day activities there. It could be challenging travelling across China on your own, tour guides help a lot in improving the efficiency of logistics. China, see you next time!

Perfect service I booked a tour to Lhasa through Windhorse. They were very rapid with the responses and accommodated all my needs. When, three week before the start of my tour, an internal flight to Lhasa was cancelled by the airlines, they proactively came up with alternatives for me. If I go the China again, I will turn to Windhorse when I need a tour. I can highly recommend them !

Excellent Jenny is one of the best travel agents I have interacted with. Proactive throughout, she gave sound and prompt advice and was a delight to deal with. Before our 8 day tour of Kham Tibet, we went down an AI rabbit hole about the state of the roads (they were more than good!) and bombarded her with random vehicle questions that she answered with her typical polite helpfulness. Her organisation and help were much appreciated and we had a wonderful trip, seeing beautiful scenery and amazing monasteries. Her choice of guide and vehicle were both excellent.

Good experience two times I used this company in 2019 to arrange private tours and logistics in Xi'an, Chengdu, and the Zhangjiajie areas. When I revisited in 2026 I used this company again for Datong and Zhangjiajie. I worked in particular with Jenny Dai. Jenny amazed me with how responsive she was and how excellent her communications were. She was very helpful in arranging everything and explaining things that I didn't understand. I would recommend this company for anyone considering visiting China, in particular those who are interested in private tours. I thought their prices were quite reasonable.

Beijing and mount kailash parikrama A group of friends from US, we spent 18 days visiting Beijing and Tibet, all arranged by and with the help of qualified personnel of Windhorse tours. In Tibet we visited EBC, Lhasa along other places, and did mount Kailash parikrama. Windhorse tours coordinated the whole trip very well with timely and detailed info, excellent hotels etc. Delia was superb in coordinating the entire trip. Queena was an excellent guide in Beijing. Guide Jampa Tenzin and driver Lotu supported us fine in Tibet. I highly recommend Windhorse tours.
