Beijing is a must-visit in every China tour. Now, let’s dive into what attractions you should visit in Beijing:

The Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, and Summer Palace are a must, but if you want to explore the city and learn and see a little more, we suggest visiting the Drum Tower and Dongcheng North, and also the ancient Hutong alleys.

The Drum Tower and Dongcheng North

The Drum Tower and the Bell Tower were once the tallest buildings in Beijing, standing over the surrounding hutong neighborhoods. The Drum Tower, which is 46 meters high, used to beat its great drums to sound the curfew after nightfall during the Qing dynasty, and then every two hours to coordinate the city’s night patrols.

Visitors can reach the top of the Drum Tower by climbing a steep stairway. Inside, you’ll find the Night Watchman’s Drum (更鼓, Gēnggǔ), the only original watch drum left. A drumming troupe performs on replica drums every hour from 9:30 am, with the last show at 4:45 pm (except at 12:30 pm).

The original drummers knew when to play their drums by using a water clock (clepsydra), a copy of which is displayed in the tower.

Along with the Drum Tower, the Bell Tower served as Beijing’s official timekeeper during the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, until 1924. The bell, which is said to weigh over 54 tonnes, was sounded in sequence with the drums to mark the changes in the morning and night watches. Since 1990, the bell has been rung once a year on December 31st.
