Best 10-Day China Itinerary for First-Time Visitors: Beijing, Xi’an and Shanghai

Windhorsetour Private China tour guests visiting the Terracotta Warriors in Xi'an

Route: Days 1–4 Beijing · Days 5–6 Xi’an · Days 7–10 Shanghai
Best for: First-time visitors who want China’s classic highlights

Beijing, Xi’an and Shanghai, often called China’s Golden Triangle, is the best 10-day route for most first-time visitors. It pairs China’s most famous historical sites with its most modern city, and the three cities connect by high-speed rail.

DaysDestinationHighlights
1–4BeijingGreat Wall, Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, Summer Palace
5–6Xi’anTerracotta Warriors, Ancient City Wall, Muslim Quarter
7–10ShanghaiThe Bund, Yu Garden, Oriental Pearl TV Tower, day trip to Suzhou or a water town

Days 1–4: Beijing

Beijing needs four days to cover the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, the Summer Palace, the Temple of Heaven and a full day at the Great Wall. We usually recommend the Mutianyu section for first-time visitors because it is scenic, well restored and less crowded than Badaling. Save your last morning for the hutong lanes of old Beijing, and don’t leave without trying Peking duck.

Days 5–6: Xi’an

Xi’an, the ancient capital and starting point of the Silk Road, is about 4.5-5 hours from Beijing by high-speed train. The Terracotta Warriors, one of the world’s greatest archaeological finds, are the highlight, followed by the Ancient City Wall and the lively Muslim Quarter.

Days 7–10: Shanghai

Shanghai is 6 to 7 hours from Xi’an by high-speed rail or about 2 hours by flight. Stroll the Bund, visit Yu Garden, explore the former French Concession and take in the skyline from the Oriental Pearl TV Tower. Most 10-day trips also include a day trip to Suzhou’s classical gardens or a water town such as Tongli, Zhouzhuang or Zhujiajiao. The route works equally well in reverse if your international flights suit it better.

Recommended tour: 9-Day Beijing, Xi’an & Shanghai Tour. This classic Golden Triangle tour can be extended to 10 days with an extra day in Shanghai for a day trip to Suzhou’s classical gardens or a nearby water town like Zhouzhuang or Tongli.

10-Day China Itinerary with Giant Pandas

Giant panda in Chengdu on a 10 day China itinerary with pandas

Route: Days 1–4 Beijing · Days 5–6 Xi’an · Days 7–10 Chengdu
Best for: Families, food lovers and panda fans

This route combines Beijing’s imperial landmarks, Xi’an’s ancient history, and Chengdu’s giant pandas, teahouses, old streets and Sichuan cuisine. We usually arrange the panda visit early in the morning, when the pandas are most active, leaving the rest of the day for Chengdu’s relaxed local culture. For a closer experience, our Panda Volunteer Program lets you work alongside the keepers for a day.

10-Day China Itinerary with Zhangjiajie

Zhangjiajie sandstone pillars on a 10 day China itinerary

Route: Days 1–4 Beijing · Days 5–7 Zhangjiajie · Days 8–10 Shanghai
Best for: Active travelers who want dramatic natural scenery

This route combines Beijing’s iconic landmarks, Zhangjiajie’s Avatar Mountains and Shanghai’s modern city life. The towering sandstone pillars of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park inspired the floating mountains in the movie Avatar. Three full days cover the park, Tianmen Mountain and the Glass Bridge. The park is much larger than most visitors expect, so we recommend allowing enough time to enjoy the main scenic areas without rushing.

Recommended tour: 10-Day China Scenic Landscapes Tour.

10-Day China Itinerary with Guilin Li River and Yangshuo

Li River Cruise

Route: Days 1–4 Beijing · Days 5–7 Guilin, Yangshuo and Longji · Days 8–10 Shanghai
Best for: Travelers who want scenery and a slower countryside pace

A Li River cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo is the highlight, passing the karst peaks shown on China’s 20-yuan banknote. We usually recommend one night in Yangshuo and one at the Longji Rice Terraces, giving you time to experience rural China through river scenery, villages, rice fields and quiet mountain views.

Recommended tour: 10-Day Beijing, Guilin & Shanghai Tour.

10-Day China and Tibet Itinerary

Lhasa Tour highlight - Potala Palace

Route: Days 1–4 Beijing · Days 5–10 Lhasa, Yamdrok Lake and Shigatse
Best for: Travelers who want both classic China and Tibet in one trip

This route is for travelers who want to experience both Beijing and Tibet in one trip. After Beijing, you fly to Lhasa for the Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple and Barkhor Street, then continue on a two-day excursion to Yamdrok Lake, Gyantse and Shigatse. Lhasa sits at about 3,650 meters (11,975 ft), so we keep your first days in Tibet at a relaxed pace to help you adjust to the altitude. Foreign travelers need a Tibet Travel Permit, which we arrange as part of your tour.

Recommended tour: 10-Day Beijing, Lhasa & Shigatse Tibet Tour.

10-Day China Itinerary with a Yangtze River Cruise

Yangtze River cruise through the Three Gorges on a 10 day China trip

Route: Days 1–4 Beijing · Days 5–8 Chongqing and Yangtze cruise to Yichang · Days 8–10 Shanghai
Best for: Couples, senior travelers and anyone who likes a river cruise and traveling in a slower pace

A 4-day, 3-night cruise from Chongqing through the Three Gorges to Yichang is the centerpiece of this route, with dramatic river gorges, riverside towns and one of China’s most scenic journeys. You unpack only once while the scenery changes around you. Before boarding, Chongqing offers its dramatic skyline, spicy hotpot and the light rail that runs through a residential building.

Do you need a visa for a 10-day China trip?

It depends on your nationality. See our China Visa-Free Travel Policy guide for the full rules.

  • 240-hour (10-day) visa-free transit: Travelers from 57 eligible countries can stay up to 10 days without a visa when continuing to a third country or region with a confirmed onward ticket. Hong Kong and Macau count as separate regions.
  • 30-day visa-free entry: Travelers from many countries can visit visa-free for up to 30 days.

U.S. passport holders qualify for 240-hour transit but not for 30-day visa-free entry. The simplest way to qualify is to start or end your trip in Hong Kong or Macau. For example, fly from the U.S. to Beijing, travel through mainland China for up to 10 days, then fly home from Hong Kong. If your trip is longer than 10 days, or you fly direct round trip between the U.S. and mainland China, you need a tourist (L) visa.

Most routes in this guide work under 240-hour transit. There are two exceptions: Tibet, which requires a Tibet Travel Permit, and Pingyao on the Ancient China Heritage Route, which is outside Shanxi’s permitted area of Taiyuan and Datong. If you’re unsure which policy applies, contact us and we’ll confirm before you book.

10-Day China Itinerary FAQs

Is 10 days enough for China?

Yes. Ten days covers three destinations, such as Beijing, Xi’an and Shanghai, at a comfortable pace. With more time, a two-week trip lets you add a fourth destination without rushing.

Should I choose Guilin or Zhangjiajie?

Choose Guilin for the Li River cruise, Yangshuo countryside, and China’s most famous karst landscapes. Choose Zhangjiajie for the Avatar Mountains, Tianmen Mountain, the Glass Bridge, and a trip with more walking.

Can I visit four destinations in 10 days?

It depends on the destinations. Four major destinations, such as Beijing, Xi’an, Guilin and Shanghai, do not fit comfortably into 10 days. They are far apart, and you would spend a travel day almost every other day. Our 13-Day Best of China Tour covers all four at a more comfortable pace.
Four destinations can work in 10 days when they are closer together and well connected by train, such as Beijing, Datong, Pingyao and Xi’an. For most first-time visitors, we recommend focusing on three destinations in 10 days.

Can I visit Tibet in 10 days?

Yes. Beijing, Lhasa and Shigatse fit in 10 days, including the Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple and Yamdrok Lake. A Tibet Travel Permit is required, and we arrange it as part of your tour.
