Panda volunteer program involves actively participating in activities and tasks related to the care and conservation of giant pandas at dedicated research and breeding centers in China. Volunteers, guided by experienced professionals, may engage in various tasks such as preparing panda food and snacks, cleaning enclosures, assisting with medical check-ups, and providing enrichment activities for the pandas. This hands-on experience allows volunteers to learn about these iconic endangered animals, contribute to their preservation efforts, and gain a deeper understanding of panda behavior and habitat. It's a unique opportunity to get up close and personal with giant pandas while supporting their conservation.

* Everything that you need to know about the Chengdu Panda Tour & Volunteering Program

Where can you take Panda Volunteer Work?
Near Chengdu in Sichuan Province, China, there are three panda centers that the tourists can take part in the panda volunteering program, which is the Dujiangyan Panda Center, the rebuilt Wolong Panda Center and Bifengxia Panda Center.

For a shorter, one-day experience, we recommend Dujiangyan or Wolong Panda Center. These centers are just a 1-2 hours drive from Chengdu, and you don't need any pre-training to participate in the panda keeper programs within the panda habitat.

You can also enrich your day by combining a visit to the Dujiangyan Irrigation System (or, if you choose Wolong Panda Center, a visit to the Wenchuan Earthquake Museum).

For a more extensive panda tour and a deeper experience, Bifengxia panda base is an excellent choice. This center offers a larger facility, and you can also enjoy family-friendly activities such as hiking in Bifengxia Gorge, exploring several ancient towns along the way, and even add the visits to Mount Emei and the Leshan Buddha.

Day 01 :
Day Trip to Panda Volunteer Program in Dujiangyan or Wolong Panda Center

In the morning, around 7:00 am, you will be met in the lobby of your Chengdu hotel and then transferred to the Dujiangyan (or Wolong) Panda Breeding and Research Center. The travel time is approximately 1.5 to 2 hours.

You will spend approximately 4 to 6 hours with these adorable Chengdu pandas. You'll also interact with the dedicated staff of the panda base who have devoted their lives to caring for Giant Pandas. As part of the experience, you will receive training on how to care for pandas and learn important guidelines for working alongside your panda keeper.

At the conclusion of the program, each participant will receive a certificate as proof of their volunteering work at the base center. You will also have the chance to explore the panda base further, taking your time to observe these delightful creatures. The program typically ends around 3:00 pm.

The Panda volunteer work normally includes below experience:

Following a short training/orientation, just as above, the volunteer service might include but not be limited to:

  1. Cleaning panda areas and enclosures.

  2. Preparing food for pandas such as carrots, apples, panda bread, and their nutritional biscuits.

  3. Carrying lots of bamboos.

  4. Sometimes you might be able to help collect behavioral data.

  5. You will also have plenty of time to watch and photograph the pandas.

Please note that the panda volunteer program can range from half a day to as long as one month, allowing for the possibility of repeated volunteer work. Outdoor activities can be adjusted flexibly, and the keeper programs can be customized to accommodate various group sizes, available time, participant preferences and requirements, and other relevant factors.

Incorporating a panda volunteer program into your visit to Chengdu guarantees a unique experience that you won't find elsewhere. It is strongly advised to pre-book the panda volunteer work in advance due to daily participant limits.

Please be aware that the panda hug experience is no longer available at any of the panda centers.

Other available Panda tours in China

  1. If you just want to see pandas, consider a half-day panda tour at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.
  2. You can make a day trip to visit both Chengdu Panda Base and Sanxingdui Museum.
  3. For a longer experience of Panda Volunteer program, we recommend 4 days Panda volunteer work at Bifengxia Panda Base or combine with Mount Emei to make it to 6 days

Hi Jude,
Thanks for contacting us! Sorry to tell you that we can't organize this trip for you at this moment. Because 2 pandas have been infected with canine distemper in Shannxi and unfortunately died in last December. So all the panda bases in and around Chengdu have suspended their close contact with pandas programs, like allowing visitors to take pictures while holding a panda and the panda volunteer program. That date is to be announced.
I have just sent you an email with the details, please kindly check it.
Will look forward to hearing from you again!
Cheers,

Hi. My friend and I will be in Chengdu next week and may be interested in your Panda Volunteer trip, but we have a bunch of questions. 1. We were wondering what the volunteer activities are and if there are choices about what you do. Do you actually have contact with the pandas? 2. Also what time does the trip leave Chengdu? 3. I saw that the price is $171 per person. Does that include meals and all trip expenses? 4. Do you go everyday, and how many days in advance would we need to reserve? Thank you in advance for all your help.
