You can reach Nyingchi from both Lhasa and some major cities in mainland China.
• From Lhasa:
The most convenient way is by high-speed train, which takes around 5 hours and offers stunning views of valleys and the Yarlung Tsangpo River. Alternatively, you can also drive from Lhasa via the new Lhasa–Nyingchi highway or the original G318 highway, a 5–6 hour journey with scenic stops along the way and an optional visit to Draksum Tso Lake.
• From some major cities in mainland China:
You can fly directly to Nyingchi Mainling Airport (LZY) from Chengdu, Chongqing, Xi’an, and Beijing. The Chengdu and Chongqing routes are the most frequent and reliable, taking about 2–2.5 hours.
Another option is to take the Qinghai–Tibet train to Lhasa, then continue to Nyingchi by high-speed train or car.
For those who love road adventure, the Sichuan–Tibet Highway (G318) offers a breathtaking multi-day overland journey through some of Tibet’s most spectacular landscapes and will pass Nyingchi.
Yes. Since Nyingchi is part of the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR), all foreign travelers need a Tibet Travel Permit (TTP) to enter. This permit can only be arranged through a licensed Tibet travel agency, which will also organize your trip in Tibet.
