Itinerary
The 9-Day Nyingchi–Ranwu–Lhasa Tour takes you across eastern Tibet and the capital city of Lhasa, combining breathtaking landscapes with iconic cultural sites.
Nyingchi, often called the “Switzerland of Tibet” for its lush forests, rivers, and snow-capped peaks, offers a striking contrast to the plateau’s arid west. The tour begins in Bayi, with visits to Biri Holy Mountain, the Great Cypress Reserve, Lulang Forest, and Guxiang Lake before continuing to Pomi. From there, make a day trip to Ranwu Lake and Midui Glacier, where the landscapes are considered among the most spectacular along the Sichuan–Tibet Highway, with traditional Tibetan villages, glaciers, alpine meadows, forests, rivers, and snow mountain peaks. On the return journey to Bayi, spend a night in Tashigang Village, experiencing traditional Tibetan rural life and its scenic alpine pastures. Continue west through the Nyang River Valley with a detour to the sacred Basum-tso Lake, then cross Mila Pass into Lhasa. In Tibet’s capital, explore the Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Street, and the great monasteries of Drepung and Sera, along with the Norbulingka Summer Palace. This journey blends Tibet’s natural wonders with its spiritual treasures, offering a rich and immersive travel experience.
Fly to Nyingchi, one of Tibet's most scenic regions, often referred to as the "Switzerland of Tibet" for its breathtaking alpine landscapes. Known for its lush forests, clear rivers, and majestic mountains, Nyingchi offers a stunning contrast to the more arid regions of Tibet. The area is especially famous in spring when the peach blossoms bloom, blanketing the valley in a sea of pink and white. This vibrant display of nature attracts many visitors, particularly from late March to mid-April, during the peak peach blossom season.
Upon arrival at Nyingchi airport, your local Tibetan guide and driver will greet you and transfer you to Bayi town for check-in at your hotel. In the afternoon, enjoy a visit to Biri Holy Mountain, renowned for its serene beauty and panoramic views. The rest of the day will be dedicated to resting and acclimatizing to the high altitude, allowing you to adjust and prepare for the days ahead.
Driving Distance: 230 km, Approx. 5-6 hours
After breakfast, start with a visit to the Great Cypress Nature Reserve, just a short drive from Bayi. Here you’ll find towering cypress trees more than 2,500 years old, the oldest revered in the Bön tradition and still a place of local pilgrimage.
Continue east to Serkhym-la Pass (4,728 m), one of the best viewpoints in eastern Tibet. On a clear day, you can see the majestic Mt. Namcha Barwa (7,782 m) and Gyala Pelri (7,151 m) in distance, with prayer flags fluttering in the mountain wind.
From the pass, the road winds down through alpine valleys filled with rhododendron bushes into the Rongchu Valley, home to the vast Lulang Forest (3,700 m). This alpine meadow belt is covered with spruce, pine, and rhododendron, and backed by jagged snow peaks. Stop at the viewing platform to enjoy the sunning panoramas of valleys and mountains — some of the most iconic scenery in Nyingchi, the “Little Switzerland of Tibet.”
Later, continue to Guxiang Lake, a hidden gem ringed by mountains. The still waters reflect the snowy peaks, creating a peaceful setting ideal for photos and quiet moments.
Arrive at Bomi in the late afternoon and check into your hotel. Stay overnight at Bomi.
In the morning, drive about 10 km from Bomi to Midui Village, the starting point for the hike to the famous Midui Glacier. Ranked among the most beautiful glaciers in China, Midui is celebrated for its dramatic icefalls, alpine lakes, and lush forests set against towering snow peaks. The round-trip trek takes around 3–4 hours, allowing plenty of time to enjoy the stunning scenery.
In the afternoon, continue your journey with a scenic drive from Pomi to Ranwu lake, which is known the most breathtaking part of Sichuan-Tibet overland travel. The drive follows forested valleys and rushing rivers, with occasional views of distant snowy peaks. As you approach Ranwu, the scenery becomes more dramatic, the turquoise waters of the lake are framed by surrounding glaciers, snow-capped mountains, and wide alpine meadows.
Stay overnight in a local guesthouse or lakeside hotel.
In the morning, take your time to explore the stunning Ranwu Lake, one of the most beautiful alpine lakes in Tibet. Surrounded by glaciers and snow-capped mountains, the lake’s turquoise waters change color with the seasons and time of day. To fully appreciate its beauty, drive to the Upper, Middle, and Lower sections of Ranwu Lake, each offering unique perspectives, from broad, open waters to glacier-fed inlets and tranquil bays. Take time for photography and short walksas you immerse yourself in this serene alpine setting.
After enjoying Ranwu, drive along the G318 Highway back toward Pomi, passing through valleys, forests, and river gorges. After breakfast, follow the Nyang River Valley, one of the most beautiful river valleys in Tibet and a major tributary of the Yarlung Tsangpo, as you begin the drive west toward Lhasa.
Make a detour to visit Basum-tso Lake (Draksum Tso, 3,500 m), a stunning alpine lake revered by the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism. The lake is surrounded by snow-capped peaks and ancient forests, and its turquoise waters form a beautiful contrast with the greenery. On a small island stands Tsodzong Monastery, a 1,500-year-old temple reached by a wooden bridge. From the Daqiela Viewing Platform, you can admire panoramic views of the lake and its surroundings. In spring, peach blossoms along the shores add even more charm. An optional boat ride is available for those who wish to experience the lake from the water.

Today you will explore two of Lhasa’s most important landmarks: the Jokhang Temple with its surrounding Barkhor Street, and the iconic Potala Palace.
Begin at the Jokhang Temple, located in the heart of Lhasa’s old town. Revered as the holiest temple in Tibet, it draws pilgrims from across the plateau who prostrate, spin prayer wheels, and walk the kora. Just outside, stroll along Barkhor Street, a lively pilgrimage circuit and market where Tibetan culture comes alive through handicrafts, incense, and the devotion of locals.

Today you will visit three of Lhasa’s most important cultural and religious sites: Drepung Monastery, Sera Monastery, and the Norbulingka Palace.
Begin at Drepung Monastery, once the largest monastery in the world and home to as many as 10,000 monks. Founded in the 15th century, Drepung served as the seat of the Tibetan government before the construction of the Potala Palace. Walking through its vast courtyards and chapels offers a glimpse into Tibet’s monastic traditions and history.

Built in the 18th century, it was the Dalai Lama’s residence during the warmer months and is now a peaceful park filled with gardens, pavilions, and palaces.
