Best Tibet Everest Base Camp Itineraries (7–10 Days)

Five routes compared — from the classic 8-day round trip to the 10-day cultural and scenic extensions.

For most first-time travelers, the two most popular Tibet Everest Base Camp itineraries are the classic 8-day Lhasa to Everest Base Camp (EBC, North face in Tibet) route and 7 or 8 day overland journey from Lhasa to Kathmandu via EBC. Travelers with more time can extend the trip to Namtso Lake, Yarlung Valley, eastern Tibet through Nyingchi, or even Mount Kailash in far western Tibet.

Quick Answer: Tibet EBC Itineraries

  • Best first-time route: Lhasa → Everest Base Camp → Lhasa (8 days)
  • Best if you’re continuing to Nepal: Lhasa → EBC → Kathmandu (7–8 days)
  • Best scenic extension: Lhasa + EBC + Namtso Lake (10 days)
  • Best cultural extension: Lhasa + Yarlung Valley + EBC (10 days)
  • Best for acclimatization: Nyingchi → Lhasa → EBC (10–12 days)
  • Recommended trip length: 8–10 days minimum
  • Everest Base Camp altitude: 5,200m (17,060ft)
  • Tibet permit: Required — arranged by your agency, not independently

What are the Best Tibet Everest Base Camp Itineraries?

For most first-time travelers, the best Tibet Everest Base Camp itinerary combines 3 days in Lhasa (3,650 m) with a 4–5 day overland journey to EBC (5,200 m) along the Friendship Highway, with stops at Yamdrok Lake, Gyantse, Shigatse, and optionally Sakya. The total trip takes 7–8 days, ending either back in Lhasa or continuing overland to Kathmandu via the Gyirong border.

8 days: The recommended classic route, offering a more comfortable pace and better acclimatization.

7 days: A shorter version of the same route for travelers with limited time.

10 days: Adds extensions such as Namtso Lake, Yarlung Valley, or eastern Tibet through Nyingchi.

Lhasa + Yarlung Valley + EBC (10 Days)

The cultural extension. Best if Tibetan history matters as much as the mountain.

Yumbulakang Palace in Tibet’s Yarlung Valley

Most Tibet EBC itineraries head straight west from Lhasa. This one turns south first.

The Yarlung Valley is the historic birthplace of Tibetan civilization — and most Tibet travelers never see it. This route adds Samye Monastery, the first Buddhist monastery established in Tibet, and Yumbulakang Palace, traditionally Tibet’s oldest building, before joining the Friendship Highway west to EBC. The lower elevation of the valley also makes for more gradual acclimatization before the road climbs toward 5,200m.

Nyingchi, Lhasa, EBC and Namtso (10 Days)

The gradual approach. Best for altitude-sensitive travelers who want a broader Tibet experience.

Lulang forest in Nyingchi, one of the highlights for a Nyingchi tour

The most gradual altitude approach of any route here. Starting in Nyingchi at 3,000m gives travelers a gentler introduction to Tibet’s elevation before the road climbs toward Lhasa, EBC, and Namtso.

Four landscapes in one journey: eastern Tibet’s forests, Lhasa’s monasteries, the Himalayas around Everest, and Namtso’s open plateau. Especially popular with travelers who want more time to adjust to the altitude, first-timers from Southeast Asia, and anyone looking for a broader Tibet experience in 10 days.

Private tour only.

How to Get to Tibet for an EBC Trip

Most travelers reach Lhasa by flight or by the Tibet train before heading west to Everest.

Scenery along Qinghai Tibet Railway

By train: We usually recommend the train from Xining rather than Beijing or Shanghai — the journey is shorter, and a day or two in Xining before boarding gives you a gradual head start on acclimatization as the train climbs onto the plateau. Either way, plan at least 3 full days in Lhasa before heading west.

By flight: Faster (2–4 hours from most major Chinese cities), but you arrive directly in Lhasa at 3,650m with no gradual altitude adjustment.

Either way, spending at least 3 days in Lhasa before traveling to Everest Base Camp is strongly recommended for acclimatization.

Best Time for Tibet EBC Tours

Most travelers visit Tibet Everest Base Camp between April and October, when road conditions are stable and Everest views are generally clearer.

Mt Everest Sunset from Rongbuk Monastery in Tibet

April to mid-June is the most popular period, with clear skies and stable weather. September and October are also excellent for photography and mountain views after the summer rains.

Winter tours are still possible, with fewer travelers and lower entrance fees, but conditions become much colder above 4,000 m.

See our Best Time to Visit Tibet guide for a full seasonal breakdown.

Tibet Permit for Everest Base Camp (2026)

Independent travel in Tibet is not permitted. All foreign travelers must travel with a licensed Tibetan guide in a pre-arranged tour.

Tibet Travel Permit, an entry permit to visit tibet

A Tibet Travel Permit is required to visit EBC. Your Tibet travel agency arranges the permit, travelers cannot apply independently, and processing typically takes 15–20 days, so plan ahead.

Many nationalities now qualify for China’s 30-day visa-free entry, but the Tibet Travel Permit is still required in addition.

Travelers continuing overland from Tibet to Nepal can apply for a Nepal visa on arrival at the Gyirong border (USD 30 for 15 days).

Group or Private Tibet EBC Tour?

Classic Lhasa to Everest Base Camp itineraries are available as both group and private tours. Group tours follow fixed weekly departures and are usually the most affordable option for solo travelers and couples.

Private tours offer more flexibility in pacing and travel dates, making them a better fit for families, larger groups, photographers, and anyone who needs a more flexible or customized experience.
