Bifengxia Panda Base
Bifengxia Panda Base(碧峰峡大熊猫基地), located in Ya’an about 2.5 hours southwest of Chengdu, is one of China’s top panda conservation centers and a hidden gem for panda lovers. Established in 2003 as an extension of the Wolong Panda Center, it aims to protect the species by expanding breeding, research, and rescue efforts in a safer, spacious environment. Today, this forested mountain base is home to more than 60 giant pandas of all ages, cared for by a dedicated team of experts. Located in a cool, misty gorge lined with bamboo, waterfalls, and quiet trails, Bifengxia Panda Base provides a peaceful, close-up experience with these gentle giants.

What You’ll See and Do at Bifengxia Panda Base
Bifengxia is home to around 60 to 80 pandas and has several designated areas catering to pandas of all ages:
- White Bear Ground (Bai Xiong Ping): Located near the entrance, this zone houses mostly adult pandas. It includes eight large enclosures equipped with enrichment tools like swings and tubs to encourage natural behavior.
- Panda Kindergarten: In this area, you’ll find a nursery and outdoor play spaces where you can watch cubs and juveniles learn and interact. It’s one of the most charming spots in the reserve.
- Breeding & Research Zones: These spaces support essential work, including a hospital and continuous monitoring systems, making them important for science and care.
- Overseas-born and Returnee Panda Paradise (Leopard Mountain): Designed for pandas born abroad and returned to China, this area is home to some internationally famous pandas, including Xiang Xiang from Japan.
Unlike the busier panda base in Chengdu, Bifengxia provides a calmer experience. The large, shaded enclosures are surrounded by forested hills and bamboo groves, creating a semi-wild habitat where visitors can watch the pandas as they explore, rest, and eat in a relaxed setting.
Bifengxia Panda Volunteer Programs
Bifengxia offers a unique Panda Loving Care program, also known as the panda volunteer program, which lets you get involved in meaningful conservation work. This rare opportunity allows panda lovers to participate in daily care activities and learn about panda conservation firsthand.
Activities usually include:

- Preparing food, making panda cakes, and feeding bamboo (direct feeding is not allowed)
- Observing panda behavior and watching educational documentaries
- Planting bamboo and assisting with light research tasks
Note: Close contact, such as hugging or feeding, is not permitted.
Requirements:
- Ages 12 to 70, healthy, without strong perfumes or illnesses
- Capacity: a maximum of 40 participants per day (20 during the summer months of July and August)
Days required: You can choose to do a one-day or multi-day program, but daily activities remain the same. We recommend a two-day trip, including 1.5 days for the program and another half day for hiking in nearby Bifengxia Gorge.
