Furong

Historical & Cultural Significance

Origins & Ethnic Roots

Furong Ancient Town has deep roots in Tujia ethnic heritage, one of China’s officially recognized minority groups. The Tujia people have lived in this mountainous region for centuries, known for their resilience, vibrant customs, and distinctive architectural styles. Historically, Furong (then Wangcun) was a vital trading hub between inland Hunan and the river regions, due to its strategic location along the You River. Traders passed through carrying salt, tea, and other regional goods, giving the town a unique mix of cultural influences.

Name History & Cinematic Fame

Originally known as Wangcun (王村), the town was renamed Furong (芙蓉镇) after gaining national fame through the acclaimed 1986 Chinese film Hibiscus Town (芙蓉镇). The film, which portrayed life during the Cultural Revolution, was shot on location and showcased the town’s stunning natural setting and authentic old-world charm. Its popularity drew attention to this once-overlooked settlement, turning it into a beloved travel destination.

Tujia Cultural Richness

The soul of Furong lies in its living Tujia culture. Traditional Diaojiaolou (吊脚楼) stilted wooden houses cling to cliff edges, overlooking the roaring waterfall below. Locals still practice handicrafts, folk music, and ritual dances, while donning colorful ethnic garments during festivals. From the spicy Tujia cuisine to unique wedding customs and ancestral rituals, Furong offers visitors a glimpse into a heritage that thrives amid natural splendor and modern interest.
