What are Tulou Clusters

Tǔlóu (mud houses) are unique, multistorey, fortified structures in southwest Fujian. Tulou’s purpose was to protect against bandits and wild animals, they were built between the 15th and 20th centuries.

Built-in circular or square floor plans, their walls are made of rammed earth, glutinous rice, bamboo, and wood chips. These large structures house entire clans, supporting communal living with bedrooms, wells, cooking areas, and storehouses around a central courtyard. Later tǔlóu featured stone firewalls and metal-covered doors.

The compartmentalized design is similar to modern apartments, with kitchens on the ground floor, storage on the next level, and living spaces above. Some tǔlóu have multiple buildings in concentric rings, often used as guest rooms or home schools, with a central hall for events. For defense, there is typically one entrance and no windows on the first three stories.

Initially thought to be inhabited solely by the Hakka, who migrated from northwest China during the Jin dynasty, tǔlóu in Yongding County are mostly Hakka, while those in Nanjing and Hua’an are inhabited by the indigenous Mǐnnān people. Hakka tǔlóu features communal corridors and courtyards, while Mǐnnān tǔlóu emphasizes privacy with separate staircases and patios.

Many tǔlóu are still inhabited by single clans, relying on tourism and farming. They are comfortable, being ‘warm in winter and cool in summer’.
