Do I need a special permit or visa to enter Tibet?
Do I need a special permit or visa to enter Tibet?
Yes. All international travelers (non-Chinese passport holders) need two essential documents to enter and travel within Tibet: A Valid Chinese Visa & A Tibet Travel Permit.
1. A Valid Chinese Visa or Eligibility for China’s Visa-Free Policy
If you are NOT eligible for visa-free entry: You must apply for a Chinese visa (typically a tourist visa) at a Chinese Embassy or Consulate in your home country before traveling to Tibet.
If you ARE eligible for visa-free entry: Citizens from 70+ countries can enter mainland China visa-free for up to 15 or 30 days for tourism, business, or family visits. If you qualify, you do not need to apply for a Chinese visa before your trip. Your travel agency will use your passport copy to apply for your Tibet Travel Permit.
2. A Tibet Travel Permit (TTP)
This is an essential document issued by the Tibet Tourism Bureau (TTB) that allows foreign travelers to enter the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR). Without it, you cannot board a flight or train to Lhasa, nor cross into Tibet overland. Independent travel in Tibet is not allowed for foreign travelers. The permit must be arranged by a licensed Tibet travel agency as part of a guided tour.
Important Note for Nepal Entry and Visa-Free Policy
If you plan to enter Tibet directly from Nepal (by flight or road):
If you are visa-free eligible: You do not need a Chinese visa. Your travel agency will use your passport to apply for the Tibet Travel Permit.
If you are not visa-free eligible: Your agency will assist you in applying for a China Group Visa, which is issued by the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu using your original passport. This process usually takes 3–5 working days. So you need prepare to stay several day before you enter Tibet.
