When is the best time to visit Yunnan?
Generally the best time to visit Yunnan is during spring (February to May) and autumn (September to November). These seasons offer the most pleasant weather, stunning landscapes, and fewer tourists.
Spring brings blooming flowers and fresh greenery, especially in highland areas like Dali and Luoping. Autumn offers golden rice terraces in Yuanyang, clear skies, and ideal conditions for trekking in places like Tiger Leaping Gorge and Yubeng Village.
If you’re planning outdoor activities, spring and autumn are your best bet.
Want to see what each season is like? Here’s a breakdown:
Spring (February-April): Spring arrives early in Yunnan compared to northern China. Most parts of the province come alive with color. With large temperature differences between day and night (8°C to 20°C / 46°F to 68°F), you’ll see rape flowers blooming in Luoping in late February, cherry blossoms in Dali, and vibrant wildflowers across the region. It’s a wonderful time for hiking and soaking in the freshness of the season.
Summer (May-August): Summer is warmer and wetter, with more rainfalls in the afternoon. However, higher-altitude places like Lijiang and Shangri-La remain pleasant, two great places to escape the summer heat, you’ll find colorful wildflowers across the pastures of Shangri-La. However, hiking to Yubeng Village is not recommended during this period, as trails can become very muddy on rainy days.
Autumn (September-November): Autumn is considered as one of the best season in Yunnan, with clear skies and little rain. It is the perfect time for outdoor activities like hiking to Tiger Leaping Gorge & Yubeng village, exploring Shangri-La, and admiring the golden rice terraces in Yuanyang. Temperatures are mild, range from 15°C-25°C (59°F-77°F).
Winter (December to January): Most of Yunnan stays relatively mild in winter, except for the northern Tibetan region around Shangri-La, where it can be much colder. In other parts, daytime temperatures can reach up around 20°C (68°F). It’s the low tourist season with fewer crowds. Xishuangbanna in the far south offers tropical rainforest scenery and warm weather, making it a great winter escape. For snow lovers, head to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain in Lijiang or Meili Snow Mountain in Shangri-La. Early mornings in Yuanyang are also magical, with mist and golden light over the terraces.
