5 days Jiuzhaigou, Zoige Grassland Tour with Huanglong
This 5-day Jiuzhaigou Zoige Grassland tour from Chengdu includes turquoise lakes, Huanglong's colorful pools, Tibetan nomad visits, Langmusi Monastery, and the First Bend of Yellow River by train and private car.
Itinerary
This 5-day Jiuzhaigou Zoige Grassland tour with Huanglong combines Sichuan's spectacular natural scenery with Tibetan culture. Travel by high-speed train to Jiuzhaigou, then explore by private car.
Jiuzhaigou National Park features crystal-clear turquoise lakes and waterfalls. Highlights include Five Flower Lake, Pearl Shoal Waterfall, and Long Lake at 3,100 meters.
Huanglong showcases colorful travertine pools at 3,000-3,600 meters. Cable car up, then walk downhill past brilliant pools created by mineral deposits.
Zoige Grassland on the Tibetan Plateau (3,400-3,600m) offers vast grasslands where nomads herd yaks. Visit Flower Lake and experience nomadic life in a traditional yak-hair tent.
Langmusi, a remote Tibetan town at 3,300 meters, features an active monastery and traditional villages.
First Bend of the Yellow River at Tangke provides panoramic grassland views.
Best time: June-August for green grasslands and wildflowers, or September-October for autumn colors.
Take the noon or early afternoon high-speed train from Chengdu East Railway Station to Huanglong Jiuzhaigou Station (about 2 hours). The train travels through scenic Sichuan countryside.
Upon arrival, your driver meets you for the 2-hour transfer to Jiuzhaigou. The drive takes you through mountain valleys with Tibetan villages along the way.
Check into your hotel near Jiuzhaigou National Park. Rest of the day is free to rest and adjust to the altitude (around 2,000-2,500m). You can walk around the local town area if you feel up to it.
Overnight near Jiuzhaigou.
Spend the full day exploring Jiuzhaigou National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its turquoise lakes, waterfalls, and forests. The park is shaped like a Y with three main valleys.
Use the park's eco-bus system to travel between valleys, and walk along wooden boardwalks between viewpoints. Highlights include:
Shuzheng Valley: Nuorilang Waterfall (one of China's widest waterfalls), Shuzheng Lakes (a series of stepped lakes), and Reed Lake
Rize Valley: Five Flower Lake (the most colorful lake with shifting turquoise and emerald hues), Pearl Shoal Waterfall (cascading across limestone terraces), and Mirror Lake (known for perfect reflections on calm days)
Zechawa Valley: Long Lake (the park's largest and deepest lake at 3,100m), and Five-Color Pond (small but incredibly vivid with multiple shades of blue and green)
Optional evening: Tibetan-Qiang cultural show with traditional music and dance (additional cost)
Overnight near Jiuzhaigou.
Morning drive to Huanglong National Park (about 2.5-3 hours). The road crosses a high mountain pass at around 4,000m before descending to Huanglong.
Huanglong National Park is known for thousands of colorful travertine pools cascading down the valley, created by mineral deposits over thousands of years. The park sits at 3,000-3,600m altitude.
Take the cable car up to the area near Huanglong Temple (saves energy for the altitude). Walk to Five-Color Pond at the top, the park's most famous spot with brilliant yellow, blue, and green pools.
Descend on foot along wooden boardwalks (about 3-4 hours walking downhill) past layered travertine terraces, small waterfalls, and alpine forest. The descent is much easier than climbing up.
Afternoon drive to Songpan Ancient Town (about 1.5-2 hours). Songpan is a historic town on the old Tea Horse Road with well-preserved city walls.
Overnight in Songpan.
Drive from Songpan across the Zoige (Ruoergai) Grassland to Langmusi (about 240 km, 4-5 hours with stops). This route takes you onto the eastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau.
Zoige Grassland is a vast high-altitude wetland and grassland area (around 3,400-3,600m) with nomadic Tibetan herders, yaks, sheep, and horses grazing. In summer (June-August), the grasslands are green with wildflowers.
Stop at Flower Lake (Ruo'ergai Flower Lake), a high-altitude wetland. Walk along boardwalks through the marshland to see the lake and grasslands. Summer is the best time when flowers bloom.
Visit a local Tibetan nomad family in their traditional black yak-hair tent. Try yak butter tea, taste homemade yak cheese and yogurt, and learn about their nomadic lifestyle of following seasonal grazing patterns across the high-altitude grasslands.
Continue to Langmusi, a small Tibetan town at the Sichuan-Gansu border (about 3,300m altitude). The town sits in a valley surrounded by mountains with a peaceful, remote atmosphere.
Afternoon arrival. Walk around the town and visit the monastery area if time permits.
Overnight in Langmusi (altitude 3,300m - you may feel the altitude here).
Morning visit to Langmusi Monastery (also called Kirti Gompa), an active Tibetan Buddhist monastery. Walk through the monastery grounds and nearby Tibetan villages. The area offers good views of the surrounding valley and mountains.
Drive to Tangke to see the First Bend of the Yellow River (about 2 hours from Langmusi). This is where the Yellow River makes its first major turn after emerging from the mountains. You can climb wooden stairs to a viewing platform for panoramic views of the river winding through grasslands. The sunset view here is spectacular, but timing depends on your train schedule.
Continue driving to Songpan (about 3 hours) for high-speed train back to Chengdu, end the travel with WindhorseTour.
