Itinerary
This Shanghai & Mount Huangshan tour follows a classic travel route linking Shanghai, Suzhou, Tongli Water Town, Mount Huangshan, and Hongcun Ancient Village. The journey begins in Shanghai with guided city sightseeing, then moves to Suzhou to explore its celebrated classical gardens and historic neighborhoods, followed by a visit to Tongli, a traditional Jiangnan water town known for its canals and old residences.
From Suzhou, travel onward by high speed train to Mount Huangshan, one of China’s most iconic mountain landscapes. An overnight stay on the mountain allows time to experience its changing scenery, including sunset and sunrise views. The tour ends after the visit to Hongcun, a UNESCO-listed village in southern Anhui, where Huizhou-style architecture and quiet village life offer a contrast to the larger cities. With high-speed train connections and private transfers, the itinerary is paced for comfort while covering the key highlights along the route.
Upon arrival in Shanghai, your local driver (w/ guide) will pick you up and escort you to your hotel. The rest of the day is at leisure for you to relax or explore the surrounding area.
In the morning, cross the Huangpu River and head to the Oriental Pearl TV Tower located at the tip of Lujiazui in the Pudong District. Recognized globally as the official landmark of Shanghai, it offers breathtaking views of the city and the Huangpu River. Next, visit Yu Garden, a beautiful garden established by a Ming Dynasty government officer, renowned for its intricate layout, stunning pavilions, and extensive use of rockeries and water features that capture the essence of nature. Afterwards, explore Shanghai Old Street to gain insights into Shanghai's history.
After lunch, head to Xintiandi in the French Concession. Originally the site of the first congress of China's Communist Party, it is now a vibrant cultural center of Shanghai featuring cafes, bars, bookstores, and boutiques.
Finally, experience the historical charm of the Bund along the Huangpu River. Your day tour in Shanghai ends at Nanjing Road, which offers a bustling shopping experience.
In the evening you might consider to enjoy a spectacular Chinese Acrobatics show (available only on weekends) or take an evening cruise along the Huangpu River to enjoy the night view of the Bund (additional fee). Overnight stay in Shanghai.
This morning, drive approximately 1.5 hours to Suzhou, the "City of Gardens." Begin at the Humble Administrator’s Garden, the largest and most renowned classical garden in Suzhou. Originally built in the early 1500s, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is celebrated for its elegant layout, tranquil ponds, and beautifully arranged pavilions. Its poetic scenery perfectly reflects the traditional Jiangnan garden style.
Then move to visit the Suzhou Museum, known for its stunning design by architect I.M. Pei and its excellent collection of local art and cultural relics.
Afterward, take a relaxed stroll along Pingjiang Road, a charming historic street dating back to the Song Dynasty. Lined with canals, stone bridges, whitewashed houses, teahouses, and artisan shops, it offers a lovely glimpse into Suzhou’s traditional life.
In the afternoon visit Lingering Garden, a UNESCO World Heritage Site celebrated for its masterful blend of natural landscapes and classical architecture across four distinct themed sections. This Ming Dynasty garden showcases elegant pavilions, rockeries, winding corridors, and peaceful courtyards.
Suzhou is also famous for its high-quality silk. If you're interested and time is allowed, you may stop by a silk factory to see the production process and pick up some unique souvenirs for family and friends.
After breakfast, drive to Tongli Water Town, one of the best-preserved ancient water towns near Suzhou with a history of more than 1,000 years. Take a boat ride along the canals to view the town’s traditional waterways, stone bridges, and well-preserved Ming and Qing dynasty residences, then explore the old lanes and historic neighborhoods on foot.
Visit the Retreat and Reflection Garden (Tuisi Garden), a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a representative example of classical Jiangnan garden design. You may also visit historic courtyard houses and small local museums to learn more about Tongli’s traditional culture and architecture.
In the afternoon, return to Suzhou and take a high-speed train to Huangshan(approximately 2 hours). Upon arrival, meet your local guide and transfer to your hotel in Tunxi District, Huangshan City. Later, stroll along Tunxi Old Street, a traditional commercial street dating back to the Song Dynasty, and visit the Hu Kaiwen Ink Factory, a well-known Anhui brand established in 1782, noted for its traditional Chinese ink production. Overnight in Tunxi, Huangshan City.
After breakfast, drive to Mount Huangshan (about 1–1.5 hours) to begin your visit. Famous for its distinctive granite peaks, ancient pine trees, and ever-changing cloud formations, Huangshan is regarded as one of China’s most iconic natural landscapes.
Enter the scenic area and take the park shuttle to Yungu Temple, where you will ride the Yungu Cableway up to the Beihai (North Sea) Scenic Area. From here, visit well-known viewpoints including Beginning-to-Believe Peak, Brush Pen Peak, Stone Monkey Watching the Sea, and Cloud-Dispelling Pavilion, all located in the Beihai Scenic Area.
In the late afternoon, head to Guangmingding (Bright Summit Peak) to watch the sunset. Stay overnight at a hotel on the mountain.
Wake early and return to Guangmingding (Bright Summit Peak) to watch the sunrise, one of the most popular experiences on Mount Huangshan. After sunrise, continue sightseeing as you walk toward the Front Mountain route, the classic and steeper side of the mountain known for its iconic scenery and wide panoramic views.
As you walk through the Yuping (Jade Screen) Scenic Area, pass famous landmarks such as Lotus Peak and the Greeting Pine (Yingke Song), a well-known symbol of Mount Huangshan. This section of the route features stone steps, distinctive rock formations, and open viewpoints that define the Front Mountain landscape. The whole walking takes about 2-3 hours depending on your physical condition. By late morning, descend the mountain via the Yuping Cableway.
(Alternatively, for an easier travel, you may return to White Goose Ridge to descend the mountain via the Yungu Cableway.)
Meet your driver at the foot of the mountain and continue by road to Hongcun Ancient Village, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its classic Huizhou architecture, tranquil ponds, and old merchant residences. It is considered one of China’s most beautiful villages and was a filming location for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Overnight at Hongcun.
In the morning, continue exploring Hongcun Ancient Village at a relaxed pace. Later, return to Huangshan City for your onward departure by train or flight, marking the end of the trip.
