This 8-day Yunnan photography tour is one of the best Yunnan spring tour routes, taking you from Kunming to Luoping and Yuanyang to capture some of China’s most impressive seasonal landscapes. The best time to visit is from mid-February to late March when Luoping’s canola fields reach full bloom and Yuanyang’s rice terraces are filled with water for sunrise and sunset reflections.

The itinerary includes the Stone Forest, Luositian and Jinjifeng viewpoints, Jiulong Waterfalls, the historic towns of Jianshui and Tuanshan and the Hani villages around Duoyishu, Bada and Laohuzui. Designed for photography enthusiasts, this tour offers ideal spring scenery, cultural encounters and access to Yunnan’s most photogenic landscapes.

Day 01 :
Arrival in Kunming

Arrive in Kunming, the capital of Yunnan and the “City of Eternal Spring,” known for its mild year-round climate. Meet your local driver (or w/ guide) and transfer to your hotel.
The rest of the day is free for you to rest or explore on your own. You may take a relaxed walk around Green Lake Park for your first impressions of Yunnan’s culture and daily life, or head to Yuantongshan Park to photograph cherry blossoms if you arrive early today.

Day 02 :
Drive to visit Stone Forest from Kunming, then continue to Luoping (B)

Start the tour today with a visit to the Lunan Stone Forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site covering 400 sq. kilometers, known for its spectacular limestone formations resembling a forest of stone. Spend the several hours immersing yourself in this stunning natural wonder by visiting the Greater Stone Forest with its towering spires and intricate caves. After having lunch here, drive about 2-3 hours east to Luoping, famous for its breathtaking canola (rapeseed) fields that bloom from mid-February to mid-March, covering the valley with a vast golden blanket.

Stop at Luoshitian Viewpoint, where the terraced canola fields follow the natural contours of the slopes, forming circular and ring-like shapes. This unique topography creates one of Luoping’s most iconic photography compositions.

Continue to the Gegang Viewpoint for sunset. From the elevated platform, you can capture dense clusters of karst hills rising above expansive yellow fields, one of the classic Luoping photography scenes. Overnight in Luoping.

Day 03 :
Full-Day Luoping Photography: Sunrise, Canola Fields & Jiulong Waterfalls (B)

Rise early and head to Lingyi Temple View Platform, a favored location among photographers for sunrise. Morning mist, soft golden light, and vast fields of blooming rapeseed create dramatic scenes.

Later, visit Jinjifeng (Golden Rooster Peak), another famous viewpoint where layered canola fields stretch to the horizon, dotted with karst peaks. This area offers stunning panoramic shots, ideal for drone photography (if permitted).

In the afternoon, drive to Jiulong (Nine-Dragon) Waterfalls Scenic Area, one of the most impressive multi-tier waterfalls in China. The main cascade and its smaller tiers form a dramatic river valley scene. From the designated viewing platforms, you can photograph over ten waterfalls arranged like flowing steps along the gorge.

Return to Luoping for the evening.

Day 04 :
Shiwandashan Region Sunrise, drive to Jianshui Ancient City (B)

Begin with another sunrise photography session at a panoramic viewpoint in the Shiwandashan (Hundred-Thousand Mountains) region. The rolling mountains and layered canola fields below provide superb aerial-style compositions, especially when morning fog lingers over the valley.

After sunrise, visit Tangli Miao Village, a traditional settlement of the Miao ethnic minority. Photograph local wooden houses, terraced fields surrounding the village, and villagers in traditional clothing going about their daily routines.

Afterward, drive to Jianshui (about 4 hours), one of Yunnan’s oldest cultural towns with over 1,200 years of history. Upon arrival, check in to your hotel, then visit the Jianshui Confucius Temple, China’s third-largest Confucian complex. The temple features ancient cypress trees, traditional pavilions, and a serene pond reflecting the grand hall, excellent for architectural photography.

Enjoy time walking through Jianshui Old Town, where well-preserved stone archways, ancestral halls, and traditional courtyards offer rich photography subjects.

Day 05 :
Tour at Jianshui - Drive to Yuanyang (B)

Start with a visit to the Zhu Family Garden, a sprawling Qing-dynasty residential complex known for its elegant courtyards, carved wooden screens, and peaceful gardens arranged around ancestral halls. This site offers intricate architectural detail for cultural photography.

Continue to Tuanshan Village, a UNESCO-listed ancient Yi settlement that has preserved its original layout and architectural style for centuries. Stone pathways, traditional homes, and historic clan houses make this village one of Yunnan’s best-preserved cultural sites.

Drive 2–3 hours to Yuanyang, home to the world-famous Honghe Hani Rice Terraces, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The terraces are at their most photogenic from November to April, when water-filled paddies reflect the sky.

Enjoy sunset at Laohuzui (Tiger Mouth) Terraces, known for steep cliffs, bold terrace layers, and glowing evening colors. This viewpoint provides one of the most dramatic terrace landscapes in the region.

Day 06 :
Full-Day Yuanyang Rice Terraces Photography (Sunrise & Sunset) (B)

Head before dawn to Duoyishu Village for sunrise. This location is one of the most iconic viewpoints in all of Yunnan. As sunlight breaks over the mountains, the steamed terraces fill with glowing reflections and soft color gradients, great for photographers seeking ethereal morning light.

Visit a local ethnic market, where Hani, Yi, and other minority groups gather in traditional dress. This is a wonderful chance to photograph local life, market scenes, textiles, and portraits.

Continue to Jingkou Hani Village, known for its preserved Hani culture. Photograph traditional terraced homes, stone-paved walkways, and the unique ecological system created by the Hani people: forests, villages, terraces, and water networks working harmoniously.

Then explore Azheke Village, famous for its mushroom-shaped houses and authentic traditional family compounds. This is one of the best-preserved Hani villages and offers excellent opportunities for photographing architecture, village life, and children playing in the terraces.

End the day at Bada Rice Terraces, one of Yuanyang’s largest terrace landscapes. Sunset here casts long shadows and warm tones over the vast valley, creating layered compositions that change minute by minute.

Overnight in Yuanyang.

Day 07 :
Drive Back to Kunming and Free Exploration (B)

After breakfast, begin the drive back to Kunming (about 4-5 hours drive).

Upon arrival in Kunming in the afternoon, enjoy free time to explore this spring city on your own. You may choose to revisit Green Lake Park for street and lifestyle photography, wander through Kunming’s Old Street for local architecture and daily scenes, or visit the Dounan Flower Market to capture colorful floral displays and the lively atmosphere of one of China’s largest flower trading hubs.

In the evening, you may enjoy the popular stage show Dynamic Yunnan by Yang Liping, featuring vibrant ethnic dance and music. (Optional, at your own expense.)

Dear Ms Lee,

Thank you for reaching out! This is Sylvia from WindhorseTour.

The best time to join the 8-day Yunnan photography tour to Yuanyang and Luoping is from mid-February to mid-March, with the peak viewing period from late February to early March when the terraced fields and canola flowers are at their most stunning.

Regarding the tour fare, the cost depends on the number of participants — generally, the more people in the group, the lower the price per person. Could you please let me know how many people will be joining? I’ll be happy to prepare a detailed itinerary and quotation for your review.

Looking forward to your reply!

Best regards,
Sylvia
