Travel from Lhasa to Kathmandu with our small tour groups affords not only the numerous highlights along the Friendship Highway, but also an affordable way to see Lhasa, the Tibetan Plateau, Everest Base Camp, and finally Nepal.

Day 01 :
Arrival in Lhasa [3658m]

Your Tibetan guide will greet you at the Lhasa Gonggar Airport or Lhasa railway station, and transport you to your hotel in the city. From the airport to Lhasa is 68 km (42 mi), roughly an hour drive to your hotel. The drive from the train station is only 15 km (9 mi) and takes 20 minutes. During the course of the ride, you will not only be amazed by the spectacular scenery of the Tibetan plateau, the scattered Tibetan villages, but certainly by the hospitality of your guide and driver, as well! After checking into the hotel, you will have the remainder of the day to rest and acclimatize to the high altitude.

Day 02 :
Lhasa City Sightseeing

Potala Palace is the best known cultural landmark in Tibet. It is most renowned as the residence of the lineage of Dalai Lamas (Avalokiteshvara), though the massive structure contains a small world within itself. It was first built by 33rd ruler of his dynasty, King Songtsen Gangpo in the 7th century, but still is in surprisingly good repair because of continual rejuvenation projects.

Jokhang temple is the most scared building in Tibetan Buddhism, located in the heart of Lhasa old town. It is the most sought after pilgrimage destination for all Tibetans.

Barkhor Street is a popular Kora (holy walking path) which surrounds the Jokhang Temple. Always full of Tibetan faithful, visitors may find mingling with local pilgrims around the Barkhor Street uniquely engaging. It is also a popular shopping district where you can buy gifts for your family and friends.

Lhasa old town gives a glimpse into the daily life of Lhasa Tibetans, which has remained largely unchanged for centuries. You can visit the outdoor markets and specialty stores of handmade bags, carpets, etc.

Day 03 :
One Day Tour to Drepung Monastery and Sera Monastery

Today you will be arranged to visit Drepung and Sera monasteries. Both Drepung and Sera monasteries are Gelugpa (yellow hat) sect monastic colleges. Drepung monastery was the seat of the Government prior to Potala, it was once the world largest monastery in the history with 10,000 monks hailed from different monasteries all over Tibet. Sera monastery is famous for its Buddhism philosophical debate practice, the clapping sound and aggressive expression of the monks are well worth to see.  Overnight at Lhasa.

Day 04 :
Lhasa / Yamdrok Lake [4,441m] / Gyantse [3,980m] / Shigatse [3,840m], 360KM, 7hours drive (B)

Morning drive up to Kampala pass [4794m], you will have a glimpse of Yamdrok-tso and spectacular views of Holy Mount Nyenchen Khangsar in the distance, the turquoise coloured Lake Yamdrok Yutso is one of the three holy lakes in Tibet, the unforgettable vista of pincer-shaped turquoise water of the lake and amazing spectacle of Mt. Nyenchen Khangsar glacier from Karo la pass is wonders of the day. Then along the Friendship southern Hwy drive to Gyantse, visit the famous stupa - Gyantse Kumbum, one of the most stunning architectural wonders in Tibet. Late afternoon drive to Shigatse. Overnight at Shigatse.

Day 05 :
Shigatse / Shegar / Rongbuk Monastery [4900m] / E.B.C [5150m], 340KM, 7 Hour Drive

Early morning start driving to Rongphu via Lhatse and Shegar, cross over Gyatsola [5200 m] & Gawu la pass [5250 m], from the top of the Gawu la you will see the spectacular Himalayan Ranges and its glorious  peaks viz Mt. Makalu [8,463 m], Mt.Lotse [8,516 m], Mt.Everest [8,844 m], Mt.Cho Oyu [8,201 m] and Mt.Shishapama [8,020 m] from Left to right, climbing down through numbers of switchback bends lead to the dry valley of Tashi Zom and then to today's destination - Everest Base Camp. Rongbuk is the highest monastery in Tibet and consist both monks and nuns, it is a good point to see Mt.Everest. Enjoy the sunset of Mount Everest when it is a clear day. Overnight at local tent guesthouse or Rongbuk Monastery guest house, (dorm bed).

Day 06 :
E.B.C / Old Tingri [4,250m] / Gyirong Border [2,250m], 370KM, 6 hours driving

Morning enjoy the sunrise of Mount Everest when it is a clear day and have breakfast at your guest house.

Afterwards start today's drive to Gyirong Border, which is newly opened for foreign tourists to continue their overland travel to Nepal. Enjoy the breathtaking landscapes along the way including Mount Shishapangma and lake Pekutso. Stay overnight at the local guest at Gyirong town.

P.S.:  Due to the earthqake in the April of 2015 in Nepal, the border Zhangmu between Tibet and Nepal has been closed. Gyirong Border is another border between Tibet and Nepal, it was an important border for the trading, but now it is also opened for tourists.

Day 07 :
Gyirong Border send off, end the travel.

After breakfast, drive about 1 hour to Gyirong border and see off to your Tibetan guide. End the services at the border.

Clear the custom and cross the border to Nepal side where you can catch the local landcruiser to Kathmandu. The drive takes about 8-9 hours due to the bad road condition, the shared landcruiser costs roughly 2500RS (about 200-250 CNY) per person. Our agency also provide private transfer at your request, please talk to your travel advisor for the latest price.

Tips: After you cross the border and enter Nepal, you need clear customs at the Nepal Immigration office. If you don’t have your Nepalese visa you can apply at the same time, normally the fee is 25 USD for the single entry visa which is valid for 15 days, 40USD for 30 days and 100USD for 90 days. To apply for the Nepalese visa, you will need to have one passport photo.

Thank you for the inquiry. This is Anita from WindhorseTour.
We also have group tours to Yamdrok Lake, Namtso Lake, Gyantze, Shigatse for your choice. But as you are a group of 4 persons, we can arrange you a private tour, then the itinerary can be easily customized based on your needs.
How does it sounds to you? And which places mentioned above are you interested?
Look forward to hearing from you soon.

Hi Pepe,

Thanks for contacting us. Currently the land border between Tibet and Nepal is still closed, but you could choose taking an overland tour from Lhasa to Everest Base Camp, then fly out to Kathmandu from Lhasa. I just sent you an email with a tour proposal for your reference. Could you please check it and let me know your opinions on that?

I'm looking forward to hearing from you again.

Cheers,

Hello Murphy,
Last year, I was told that the China-Nepal border was closed due to landslide at Kyirong. Is it open for foreigners now?
If the tour is ready to go, when can I join the group tour? I am planning to go in May or June (if it is open). Thanks

Hi Ramon,

Thanks for contacting us. If you're interested in this group tour but prefer to acclimate 3 days, then we can help you adjust the itinerary: You can arrive at Lhasa one day earlier than other travelers in this group, so that gives you one more day to acclimatize in Lhasa city.

I have sent you an email with some details about the travel dates, please advice when you plan to start this trip and just let me know if you have any further question on it!

Looking forward to hearing from you!
