This is one of the most popular tours in Tibet, it begins from Lhasa-the historic capital of Tibet, the golden sunshine and blue sky is the dreams of many travelers all over the world, it is also the pilgrimage destination of all Tibetans, mingling with local pilgrims around the Barkhor street is an extra-ordinary feeling. This tour brings you not only through the historic palaces and operating monasteries, but lines of breath-taking natural sceneries, such as turquoise water Lake Yamdrok, mighty Nyenchen Kangsar glacier and great peaks of Himalayans, will surely enrich your knowledge of the high plateau and its geography, gradually come across the rich culture of western Tibet and then to world summit Mt. Everest Base Camp, then gradually descent down through the green valley of Matsang Tsanpo gorges to Kathmandu(1300m) of Nepal. In a nut-shell, this tour covers rich cultures and traditions, historical sights and natural beauties of Tibet.
Day 01 :
Arrival at Lhasa [3,595m]

Upon your arrival at Lhasa airport or train station, you will be greeted by your Tibetan guide, from airport to Lhasa city is 68km, around an hour drive will take you to the holy city Lhasa. Driving along the Brahmaputra river and Lhasa river, you will not only amazed by the spectacular plateau scenery but also have a chance to see flocks of black-necked crane, wild duck and many other kind of wild birds, if you are not tired, stop at Nethang Giant Buhhda caving on the way. If you take the train to Lhasa, normally you will arrive in the late afternoon or evening, 20 minutes drive will take you to your hotel in Lhasa city. Check into hotel, have a good rest to acclimatize the high altitude. Overnight at Lhasa.

Day 02 :
Lhasa City sightseeing, visit Potola Palace & Jokhang Temple (B) - Walking tour is arranged today

Today is your first day of sightseeing on the high plateau, so we have purposely arranged only to visit Jokhang temple and Potala Palace. Jokhang temple is the most scared shrine in Tibet which was built in 7th century and located at the heart of old town in Lhasa, the circuit around it called Barkhor street, which is a good place to purchase souvenirs. Potala Palace is the worldwide known cardinal landmark of Tibet. The massive structure itself contains a small world within it. Mostly it is renowned as residence of the Dalai Lama lineages (Avalokiteshvara). Both of them are the focal points of pilgrims from entire Tibetan world, multitudinous pilgrims are circumambulating and prostrating in their strong faith. Overnight at Lhasa.

Day 03 :
Lhasa City sightseeing, visit Drepung Monastery, Sera Monastery & Norbulingka Summer Palace (B)

Today you will be arranged to visit Drepung, Sera monasteries and Summer Palace - Norbulingka palace. Both Drepung and Sera monasteries are Gelugpa (yellow hat) sect monastic colleges. Drepung monastery was the seat of the Government prior to Potala, it was once the world largest monastery in the history with 10,000 monks hailed from different monasteries all over Tibet. Sera monastery is famous for its Buddhism philosophical debate practice, the clapping sound and aggressive expression of the monks are well worth to see. Norbulingka is the summer palace of Dalai Lama, you can visit the residences of different lineages of the Dalai Lama. The park is crowded with picnickers and traditional activities during the Shoton (Yogurt festival) in August. Overnight at Lhasa.

Day 04 :
Lhasa / Yamdrok Lake [4,441m] / Gyantse [3,980m] / Shigatse [3,840m], 360KM, 7hrs (B)

Morning drive up to Kampala pass [4794m], you will have a glimpse of Yamdrok-tso and spectacular views of Holy Mount Nyenchen Khangsar in the distance, the turquoise coloured Lake Yamdrok Yutso is one of the three holy lakes in Tibet, the unforgettable vista of pincer-shaped turquoise water of the lake and amazing spectacle of Mt. Nyenchen Khangsar glacier from Karo la pass is wonders of the day. Then along the Friendship southern Hwy drive to Gyantse, visit the famous stupa - Gyantse Kumbum, one of the most stunning architectural wonders in Tibet. Late afternoon drive to Shigatse. Overnight at Shigatse.

Day 05 :
Shigatse / Sakya [4280m] / Shegar [4,150m], 300KM, 6-7hrs (B)

Morning visit Tashilunpo Monastery and the spectacular tombs of Panchen Lamas, do the monastery kora which provide you a great view of the whole Shigatse city. Late morning drive to visit Sakya Monastery which is the main monastery of Sakyapa sect, houses around the monastery are also in a typical gray colour. Hike around the monastery northern ruins and continue the driving to Shegar, after a short ride crossing Gyatso-la pass [5200m], you will have the first sight of Mount Everest in the distance when it is a clear day. Overnight at Shegar.

Day 06 :
Shegar[4,150m]/ Rongbuk Monastery [4,900m] / E.B.C [5,150m], 100KM, 2-3 hour drive (B)

Early morning start driving to E.B.C, cross the Gawu la pass [5250m] and enjoy the spectacular view of Himalaya mountain ranges and its glorious peaks including Mt.Makalu [8463m], Mt.Lotse [8516m], Mt.Everest [8844m], Mt.Cho Oyu [8201m] and Mt.Shishapama [8020m] from Left to right, driving down through numbers of switchback bends lead to the dry valley of Tashi Zom and then to today's destination - Everest Base Camp.

Rongbuk is the highest monastery in Tibet and consist both monks and nuns, it is a good point to view Mount Everest. Visit the monastery and explore the lodging area, enjoy the sunset over the mountain in a clear day. Overnight at local tent guesthouse or Rongbuk monastery guest house (dorm bed).

Day 07 :
Rongphu / Old Tingri [4,250m] / Gyirong Border [2,250m], 370KM, 6 hours driving

Morning enjoy the sunrise of Mount Everest when it is a clear day and have breakfast at your guest house. Afterwards start today's drive to Gyirong Border, which is newly opened for foreign tourists to continue their overland travel to Nepal. Enjoy the breathtaking landscapes along the way including Mount Shishapangma and lake Pekutso. Stay overnight at the local guest at Gyirong town.

P.S.:  Due to the earthqake in the April of 2015 in Nepal, the border Zhangmu between Tibet and Nepal has been closed. Gyirong Border is another border between Tibet and Nepal, it was an important border for the trading, but now it is also opened for tourists.

Day 08 :
Gyirong Border send off, end the travel.

After breakfast, drive about half an hour to Gyirong border and see off to your Tibetan guide. End the services at the border.

Clear the custom and cross the border to Nepal side where you can catch the local landcruiser or bus to Kathmandu. The drive takes about 8-9 hours due to the bad road condition, the shared landcruiser costs roughly 70USD (about 500CNY) per person and 25USD for a shared bus. Our agency also provide private transfer at your request, please talk to your travel advisor for the latest price.

Tips: After you cross the border and enter Nepal, you need clear customs at the Nepal Immigration office. If you don’t have your Nepalese visa you can apply at the same time, normally the fee is 30 USD for the single entry visa which is valid for 15 days, 50USD for 30 days and 125USD for 90 days. To apply for the Nepalese visa, you will need to prepare one passport photo in advance.

I'd like to see some sights from the border to Kathmandu. Is there a tour that does that, or a private car?
Also, can you recommend a company for a Bhutan tour?
Thanks...

Dear Bernd,

Thank you for your inquiry! This is Victoria, one of the trip advisors of WindhorseTour responding to you. I am more than happy to assist you on your Tibet trip planning.

To enter Tibet from Nepal side, you must prepare about 3-4 working days in Kathmandu to apply for a Group China Visa in Chinese embassy in Kathmandu, however, the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu will be closed from 19 September till 7 October 2019, therefore, we would suggest you may consider entering Tibet from one of the cities of mainland China, we can provide an invitation letter if you need for your personal China visa application.

For more details, I have sent you by email, please check the details and feel free to get back to me for any questions that you might have. With your replies, we can adjust the proposal to meet your requirements best.

All the best!

Victoria

Hi Guys,

I would like to arrange a trip that allows me to take in Lhasa, Kathmandu, Everest and more importantly the Buddhist temples, Monasteries and to really feel the spiritual culture of the people and the Buddhist monks etc. I would like to do a 10 to 15 day trip and would also like to know the following:

1. I would like to travel alone
2. Do I arrange my own flights to Kathmandu or Lhasa? Are there flights direct from UK? How much are they return?
3. What type of clothes / shoes are recommended at the various times of the year?
4. What is the price going to be approximately? Please break this down into the various costs
5. I want to do this trip in 2018 as my year in 2017 is planned. But I need to know what that overall cost is likely to be
6. I would like to be tattooed by a Buddhist Monk. Is their anywhere on the tour where I can have this done?
7. I am already heavily tattooed but can easily cover up (they are all buddhist related)...is this a problem with travelling in Tibet and Nepal?

I hope you can help as this is the trip I have longed for my whole life

Thanks

Hi Colin,

Thanks for your inquiry. This is Anita from WindhorseTour.
I would love to answer your question as below:
1. For the flights to Kathmandu or Lhasa, we would love to book the flights to Lhasa, or you can also book it on your own, if you preferred. But we do not organize international flight tickets. For your information, there is no direct flight from UK to Lhasa or Kathmandu. As for the cost of flights to Lhasa, it depends on where you will take the flight. There are daily flights/ trains to Lhasa from Beijing, Chengdu, Chongqing, Shanghai etc, Chengdu and Chongqing could be the best choices as they are called the gateway cities to Lhasa with more flights options.

2. In June, light winter clothes are still needed around Lhasa, and you could wear T-shirts in the sunshine, but we suggest that you cover up to avoid sunburn. For shoes, sturdy sneakers or hiking boots are recommend. The solar radiation is more intense the higher you go. Have a coat and gloves for higher mountains. Sunglasses and sun hats can protect you too.

3. With respect to the tattoo, there isn't any problem for traveling in Tibet or Nepal with tattoo. If you would like to be tattooed by a Buddhist Monk, I would suggest you do it at Kathmandu, as it is not available in Tibet.

4. I would like to share with you that the border Zhangmu between Tibet and Kathmandu was destroyed badly and closed for tourist groups since last April earthquake in Nepal, we are not sure when it will be open again since the geology condition in that area is still not stable. Now the government plans to open another border between Tibet and Nepal called Gyirong, but currently, the exact open date hasn't been confirmed yet.

I just sent you an email with more details, please kindly have a check and feel free to get back to me if you have any further concerns.

Look forward to hearing from you soon.

Best Regards,
Anita

Hi Lycoris,

we are a group of 3 travelling to China in June and would like to visit Tibet and Nepal.
Your tour sounds like something we are looking for.
Is there a group starting in late June? Or would it only be possible to have a private tour for the three of us?
Please also let me know how much it would cost extra to upgrade to higher class hotels.
Also, I would like to have some advise how to get to Lhasa from Xi'an best/cheapest.

Hi,

My husband and I with our 9 year old son would like to take this trip in early October this year. Do you think that is a good time for the views of the mountain?

Also we would not like to spend 3 days in Lhasa as the itinerary since we are a bit short on time. Please let us know if that is possible. Also is there a way we can go from Kathmandu and come back via Kathmandu as well (instead of reaching from Lhasa to the Base Camp)?

Please let me know if these are possible.

Hi

We are 2 adults (Australian), we'd like to do the overland tour 2 Nov to 10 Nov Lhasa to Kathmandu. Your Mt Everest Base Camp overland tour seems close to what we'd like to do. Below is a list where we'd like to go.

Could you please advise the costs for 2 adults and would it be possible to get a Tibetan permit?

Thanks and Regards
Reinilda

Lhasa sightseeing: Potala Palace (and Potala Kora, The Lukhang), Jokhang Temple, Wothang, take a Kora around The Barkhor and Barkor Square (We’d like sufficient time in Potala and Jokhang).
Drepung Monastery, Sera Monastery, Norbulingka (Pabonka Monastery is there is still time)
If there is time a visit to Ramoche Temple is also good, as well as Lhasa Village Handicrafts.
Drive to Shigatse via Gyantse: sightseeing: Lake Yamdrok, see Mt Nojin Kangtsang, Karo-la Glacier
Gyantse sightseeing: Gyantse Kumbum, Gyantse Dzong (fort)
Shigatse sightseeing: Tashilhunpo Monastery, Phuntsoling Monastery (visits to these two monasteries only if time permits)
Visit Tashilumpu Monastery and drive to Shegar, passing Lhatse and Gyamtso La Pass
Shegar sightseeing: Rongphu Monastery, Everest Base Camp

Drive to Old Tingri: see Mt Everest, Luozi, Makalu, Zhuoayou

Transfer to Kodari Border and transfer to Nepal

Hi, a few questions please. 1. Firstly, can I bring my son? He will be 11yrs old at the time of travel - we would like to depart in August or September 2013. The rest of our trip (other countries) still in planning stage. 2. I see we travel very high up - is this a problem for children? If so, is oxygen available for purchase if required? 3. can i take a train from Kathmandu to Lhasa? Otherwise I can organize flights. 4. i work for Qantas Airways in Australia in sales department - do you kindly provide travel industry discount for airline sales staff? If so, what would the discount be? Thank you. I hope to hear from you soon. Nicole

Hi Nicole,

Happy to receive your message. I also sent my reply via email:

  1. It should not be any problem for you 11 year old son to Travel to Tibet. As a parent also I would suggest you to have a general health check prior to departure.
  2. High Altitude effects everyone differently. Age and physcical condition often does not matter, just depends on how each person's body responds.
  3. We wil provided canned oxygen in the car and the guide is trained to ensure you and your family are safe during the entire trip. There are several clinics on the route.
  4. There is no train from Kathmandu to Lhasa.

Looking forward to your reply.

Cheers,

 Helen
