Tours To The Famous Drepung Monastery in Tibet
Drepung Monastery which is famous as it served as the long time residence of the Dalai Lama before the reconstruction of Potala palace. It occupies an area of 250,000 square metres with an impressive number of over 7,000 monks. It is the largest of all Tibetan monasteries! Located on the Gambo Utse mountain, five kilometers on the western outskirts of Lhasa. Drepung Monastery and was founded in 1416 by Jamyang Choje, one main disciple of Tsongkapa, the founder of Gelugpa Sect. The monastery keeps plentiful historical relics, Buddhist scriptures and impressively large thangkas.
